Chilly Open Returns for 41st Year of Golf on Ice

January 31st, 2026

WAYZATA — One of Minnesota’s most beloved winter traditions returns to the ice next month as the Wayzata Chilly Open tees off on Wayzata Bay Saturday, Feb. 7, marking its 41st year of turning the frozen surface of Lake Minnetonka into a full-scale celebration of winter, community, and creativity.

What began four decades ago as a quirky mid-winter diversion has grown into the largest and most well-known golf tournament played on ice anywhere in the world. Each year, more than 2,000 participants from near and far bundle up, don themed costumes, and take to the lake to putt tennis balls across four imaginative nine-hole courses using golf clubs and hockey sticks.

This year’s theme — Live from Wayzata… It’s the Chilly Open! — draws inspiration from Saturday Night Live, encouraging teams to lean into comedy, characters, and over-the-top flair. Golfers can register as a traditional foursome or assemble larger crews of 20 or more, transforming the bay into a lively stage of laughter and friendly competition.

Chilly Open

Tee times are scheduled for 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m., with limited tickets available. Amateur golfers may register for $60, while Pro tickets are $115. All participants receive a signature Chilly Open hat and unlimited chili throughout the day.

Following their round, golfers and spectators alike are invited into the heated 19th Hole Tent for live music by PowerTap and the always-anticipated Chili Cookoff. More than 10 local restaurants will compete, with entries judged by a panel that includes Twin Cities food personalities, local chefs, and Wayzata Mayor Andrew Mullin.

The festivities extend well beyond the ice. The day begins with free Snowga — snow yoga — at 9 a.m., offering an energetic and lighthearted start to the morning. As the sun sets, the celebration continues throughout downtown Wayzata, where restaurants and bars host after-parties, inviting visitors to dine, shop, and linger as part of this signature winter weekend.

Presented by the Wayzata West Metro Chamber, the Chilly Open is supported by a wide range of local and regional sponsors and volunteers who help make the event possible year after year.

Tickets and event details are available at WayzataChillyOpen.com. Updates, photos, and announcements can also be found on the event’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

2024 Wayzata Chilly Open Cancelled

January 25th, 2024

In a “heartbreaking” decision, The Greater Wayzata Area Chamber of Commerce, organizers of the annual Chilly Open, have announced the cancellation of the 2024 event that had been scheduled for February 10th.

Despite ongoing preparations, negotiations, various approvals, and surveys to attendees to navigate challenging weather conditions and a lack of snow, organizers ultimately faced insurmountable obstacles that led to the difficult choice to the cancel the Wayzata favorite.

Ice Conditions at Wayzata Beach. Image courtesy Wayzata Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber had been moving forward optimistically, even measuring a promising 13 inches of solid ice at the traditional location until Tuesday in spite of a record warm winter.

Unfortunately, a pressure ridge formed at the access point to the lake, posing a safety hazard with 4-6 inches of open water above the ice.

This hindered the setup for the event, forcing organizers to reconsider.

An additional backup plan near the Wayzata Sailing lake access did not receive approval at the Tuesday night City Council meeting.

Additionally, a dredging project near the beach by the City of Wayzata was set to pump water from the lagoons onto the lake, further complicating the situation.

Efforts to salvage the event included consultation with Hennepin County Water Patrol, responsible for issuing permits.

“We’re gut-wrenched to have to make the difficult decision to cancel the 2024 Wayzata Chilly Open. What started as an idea in a garage as a way to embrace the winter and the community in an incredibly unique way has grown over the last 39 years into an event known nationwide as the ultimate winter celebration in the absolute best community. Stay tuned for next year’s 40th celebration!”
Becky pierson, Chamber president

Despite exploring 8 different scenarios and plans, the challenging winter conditions proved insurmountable.

The cancellation is a significant blow not only to Chilly Open supporters and participants but also to the non-profit organization, as the event serves as a major fundraiser for the Chamber.

Acknowledging the disappointment, the Chamber extended gratitude to the Chilly Open planning committee, volunteers, sponsors, and golfers who supported the event. Plans to issue refunds to participants are underway, with organizers urging patience as the process unfolds through Eventbrite.

Looking ahead, the Chamber encourages everyone to mark their calendars for the next Wayzata Chilly Open on February 8, 2025, with a theme celebrating ‘BORN IN ’84.’

Organizers expressed their appreciation for the continued support and look forward to welcoming participants back for a memorable event next year.

Wayzata Chilly Open Committee explores shifting 2024 event to land

Wayzata Chilly open scheduled for February 10th, 2024

In its 40th year, the Wayzata Chamber‘s Chilly Open may deviate from tradition as organizers explore moving the event from the normal location on frozen Lake Minnetonka to an on-land site.

The shift is prompted by persistent mild weather conditions that cast doubt on the lake’s suitability to host the annual winter event.

An email from the Wayzata Chamber to Chilly Open attendees, courtesy of the Wayzata Chamber.

With frigid temperatures descending on the area this week, organizers are hoping for a miraculous freezing of ice on Lake Minnetonka’s Wayzata Bay.

They are also seeking input from attendees, vendors and volunteers as nearly 2,300 tickets have been sold to the 2024 Chilly Open.

About the 2024 Wayzata Chilly Open

The Wayzata Chilly Open is a community staple during the typically quieter winter months in Wayzata.

The first year it was held was 1984, and 2024 marks the 40th anniversary.

The event not only adds vitality to the area but also serves as a crucial fundraiser for Chamber operations, covering 12% of the annual operating budget while providing a positive economic impacts to the community and businesses.

Golfers attend from all over the state and beyond.

However, concerns over public safety have led organizers to closely evaluate parameters for the event.

“Plan B” allows the event to move to land

In response to the weather challenge, the Wayzata City Council approved a “Plan B,” Tuesday evening at the request of the Chamber, creating an opportunity to hold the event on-land.

The alternative plan will likely create frozen golf course(s) near Wayzata Beach, the Wayzata Depot parking lot, the Boatworks parking lot, and a portion of Grove Lane.

While some specific details are still being formulated, the Wayzata City Council approval was necessary to allow for further planning by the Chamber.

Key details

Key points of the amended plan include the closure of Grove Lane for course creation, and potentially using snow-making machines or cleared snow provided by Wayzata Public Works.

However, certain conditions will have to be adhered to, including land based regulations which do not apply on the water, maintaining access for a marina dredging project, ensuring reasonable traffic control, as well as avoiding nearby residential areas.

Input from attendees, vendors and volunteers sought

Given the approval from the Council, if the ice doesn’t freeze, the Chamber now has an opportunity to hold the event on land.

However, as indicated in an email (see above) to attendees thanking them for their patronage and patience, “There are many factors and logistics to take into consideration,” in moving the event to land.

Attached to the email to attendees, sponsors, and volunteers was an invitation and opportunity to participate in a short survey that will assist the Chilly Open Committee to plan further.

All of this is to say that the Wayzata Chamber needs a couple more days for ice formation, data gathering, and planning in order to pursue holding the event either on Lake Minnetonka or on land.

This is a developing story, stay tuned to Wayzata.com for more info.
