Break out your neon ski suits and leg warmers! The Wayzata Chilly Open is back, celebrating its 40th anniversary on February 7 and 8 with a totally rad theme: “Born in ’84.” Hosted by the Wayzata West Metro Chamber, this beloved winter tradition, featuring golf on frozen Lake Minnetonka, promises a weekend of fun, camaraderie, and creative costumes.

What started four decades ago as a quirky way to combat cabin fever has grown into one of Minnesota’s most unique and cherished winter events. Each year, more than 2,000 golfers from around the world trade fairways for frozen waters, armed with hockey sticks and golf clubs to putt tennis balls across four zany nine-hole courses.

Kick Off the Fun at the Pre Par-Tee
The festivities begin on Friday, February 7, with the Pre Par-Tee from 7 to 10 p.m. in the heated “19th Hole” tent, located in the 6Smith parking lot. This 21-and-up event features live music by the groovy Private Oates band, plus beer and wine to keep the good vibes flowing. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door, if available. Tickets can be purchased at WayzataChillyOpen.com.

Saturday: Tee Off on the Ice
The golf tournament tees off on Saturday, February 8, with sessions at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., and 2 p.m. Limited tickets are available, with amateur entry at $60 and pro-level entry at $115. Each golfer will receive a signature Chilly Open hat to commemorate the experience. After your round, warm up in the 19th Hole tent with live music by PowerTap on the Gordon James stage.

Savor the Chili Cookoff
No Chilly Open would be complete without the renowned Chili Cookoff Contest. Sample award-winning chili from over 15 local restaurants and cast your vote alongside celebrity judges Jason DeRusha, Stephanie March, Richard Fisher, and Billy Sushi. This year’s competition promises bold flavors and fierce culinary creativity.
A Community Effort
The Wayzata Chilly Open’s success is fueled by the enthusiastic support of its sponsors, volunteers, and the broader community. This iconic winter weekend serves as a celebration of local spirit and ingenuity, bringing together residents and visitors alike to embrace the joys of Minnesota’s coldest season.
