In a “heartbreaking” decision, The Greater Wayzata Area Chamber of Commerce, organizers of the annual Chilly Open, have announced the cancellation of the 2024 event that had been scheduled for February 10th.
Despite ongoing preparations, negotiations, various approvals, and surveys to attendees to navigate challenging weather conditions and a lack of snow, organizers ultimately faced insurmountable obstacles that led to the difficult choice to the cancel the Wayzata favorite.
The Chamber had been moving forward optimistically, even measuring a promising 13 inches of solid ice at the traditional location until Tuesday in spite of a record warm winter.
Unfortunately, a pressure ridge formed at the access point to the lake, posing a safety hazard with 4-6 inches of open water above the ice.
This hindered the setup for the event, forcing organizers to reconsider.
An additional backup plan near the Wayzata Sailing lake access did not receive approval at the Tuesday night City Council meeting.
Additionally, a dredging project near the beach by the City of Wayzata was set to pump water from the lagoons onto the lake, further complicating the situation.
Efforts to salvage the event included consultation with Hennepin County Water Patrol, responsible for issuing permits.

What started as an idea in a garage as a way to embrace the winter and the community in an incredibly unique way has grown over the last 39 years into an event known nationwide as the ultimate winter celebration in the absolute best community. Despite exploring 8 different scenarios and plans, the challenging winter conditions proved insurmountable.
The cancellation is a significant blow not only to Chilly Open supporters and participants but also to the non-profit organization, as the event serves as a major fundraiser for the Chamber.
Acknowledging the disappointment, the Chamber extended gratitude to the Chilly Open planning committee, volunteers, sponsors, and golfers who supported the event. Plans to issue refunds to participants are underway, with organizers urging patience as the process unfolds through Eventbrite.
Looking ahead, the Chamber encourages everyone to mark their calendars for the next Wayzata Chilly Open on February 8, 2025, with a theme celebrating ‘BORN IN ’84.’
Organizers expressed their appreciation for the continued support and look forward to welcoming participants back for a memorable event next year.
