The history of the Wayzata Depot

Noted for its innovative features such as hot water heat and indoor plumbing, it was once hailed as the most elegant depot on the Great Northern line. The inaugural train arrived in Wayzata on August 24, 1867, marking the end of the line for the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, precursor to the Great Northern.

Originally positioned east of the current site near Broadway Avenue, the first depot sparked tensions as the expanding railway threatened Wayzata’s commercial district. The ensuing feud with James J. Hill, the “Empire Builder,” led to the relocation of the train stop a mile east, with Hill constructing a new depot named Holdridge in 1893. Despite threats of a mile-long trek for residents, Hill eventually yielded, establishing the present-day Wayzata Depot to reconnect the town with the railway.

During the “Golden Age” from 1867 to 1929, Wayzata thrived as a popular destination for visitors arriving by train. Southern guests seeking respite from the summer heat flocked to the village via steamboats on Lake Minnetonka. The closure of the depot in 1971 marked the end of an era, but its legacy lives on as it was generously donated to the city of Wayzata.
