In the state Class AAA semifinals on Tuesday morning, the Wayzata girls’ soccer team swiftly secured a 5-1 victory over Maple Grove by netting three goals within the first 14 minutes of the match. Tenley Senden opened the scoring with her first of two goals just 5 minutes and 9 seconds into the game, and she later contributed an assist for Sarah Hyde’s second-half goal. Grace Estby and Davy Mokelke also found the back of the net for the Trojans, while Anya Gerlach managed to score Maple Grove’s sole goal in the late stages of the first half.

With a record of 20-1-0, the Trojans are set to compete against top-seeded Edina for the state title on Friday at 10:15 am at U.S. Bank Stadium. Meanwhile, the Crimson, with a record of 9-7-4, will face Andover in the battle for third place on Wednesday morning.

In the state class AA doubles tournament, the Wayzata duo consisting of Tasha Piyabongkarn and Greta Holmes secured a victory in the third-place match. They defeated Summer Ode and Maddie Larsen from Maple Grove with a final score of 7-5 in the first set and 6-2 in the second set.

Last Thursday, the Wayzata volleyball team had an impressive victory over Hopkins, securing their place in the Section 5AAAA championship match. Even though the Royals, seeded 5th with an 18-11 record, put up a strong fight in the first two sets, they eventually lost both sets with scores of 25-21. In the third set, the top-seeded and top-ranked Trojans had a relatively easy win with a score of 25-8, maintaining their flawless season record of 30 wins without a single loss.

Wayzata is now set to face the second-seeded Champlin Park (with a 24-6 record) for the section title on Wednesday night at Osseo High School. It’s worth noting that the Trojans have already defeated the Rebels twice this season.

In a rain-soaked match in Edina on Tuesday, the Wayzata boys’ soccer team cruised to a commanding 5-0 victory over St. Michael-Albertville in the state Class AAA quarterfinals. The game was curtailed due to lightning, but not before Wayzata had established an impressive 5-0 lead. Aiden Judickas and Lassi Koivukangas displayed their scoring prowess, each notching two goals for the Trojans. As the reigning champions and this year’s top seed, Wayzata is poised for the semifinals, where they will face Woodbury on Wednesday morning at 8:00 in the renowned U.S. Bank Stadium.

Nicole Mahabadi and Davy Mokelke found the net, securing a 2-0 victory for the Wayzata girls’ soccer team in the Class AAA state tournament quarterfinals against Lakeville North. Grace Estby delivered pinpoint corner kicks, resulting in one goal in each half. Sophia Alvarez displayed her goalkeeping prowess, denying every shot she faced to maintain the shutout.
With a strong record of 19-1-0, Wayzata is set to compete in the tournament semifinals next Tuesday at 10:00 am in the iconic U.S. Bank Stadium. Their opponent will be the victor of the Maple Grove-White Bear Lake match scheduled for Thursday.

In the closing game of the regular season on Thursday, the Wayzata football team experienced a 30-18 defeat at the hands of Anoka.
During the second quarter, Cole Heilbrun connected with Tony Ley for a touchdown pass, and Thomas Theising’s successful field goal brought the Trojans closer with a halftime score of 21-10.
Wayzata mounted a comeback effort in the third quarter when Kyle Boutwell intercepted a pass and returned it for a 70-yard touchdown. A successful two-point conversion narrowed the score to 21-18. However, Anoka would have the last word, scoring the final nine points of the game.
Anoka’s quarterback, Peyton Podany, threw for over 300 yards during the game, and Zach Welch managed to score three touchdowns.
Anoka, with a season record of 6-2, will host East Ridge in their Class AAAAAA playoff opener next Friday night. On the other hand, Wayzata, with a season record of 2-6, is set to play at Forest Lake.

In a surprising turn of events during Friday night’s highly-anticipated match, the game between the Wayzata Football Trojans (1-3) and the top-ranked Eden Prairie Eagles (4-0) was interrupted due to lightning. The decision to postpone the game came with just 8 minutes and 4 seconds remaining in the second quarter. This left players, coaches, and fans waiting for several hours as strong storms passed through the area.
Initially, the plan was to continue the game later that evening, but as time passed, it became evident that a rescheduling was inevitable. Ultimately, after a night of anxious anticipation, it was confirmed that your Wayzata Trojans would finish the game against a formidable Eden Prairie Eagles team on Saturday morning, with the kickoff scheduled for 11:00 AM.
Prior to the delay, and midway through the 1st, the Eagles intercepted a Cole Heilbrun pass after a no-call pass interference against a Trojan receiver by an Eagle defender. Eden Prairie capped a 22 yard drive with this Santosh Bommareddy TD run:
During the second quarter, the Trojans had a tough time when they made a mistake while trying to punt the ball from near their own end zone, when an intentional grounding was called while the Trojan passer was in the end zone. This mistake led to a penalty called a “safety,” and it gave the other team, the Eagles, two points. So, the score became 9-0 in favor of the Eagles.

Right after that, the Eagles scored another touchdown, and failed to score on the point after touchdown attempt making the score 15-0 in favor of Eden Prairie.
However, an unforeseen event disrupted the proceedings as indicated previously. A lightning bolt struck the area to the west of the playing field, prompting immediate safety concerns. Consequently, the game was temporarily halted under the discretion of the officiating crew.
Intense lightning, thunder, and heavy rain pounded the West Metro area for many hours. The storm was so fierce that, even at 10:00 PM, lightning was still striking close by. Because of the danger posed by the ongoing lightning strikes, officials decided to postpone the game until Saturday morning at 11:00 AM.
With the game now set for Saturday morning, Wayzata will have an opportunity to regroup, strategize, and prepare for a contest already with a score of 15-0 in favor of the Eagles. Stay tuned to Wayzata.com for more sports.

At the 37th annual Roy Griak Invitational, held at Les Bolstad Golf Course, the Wayzata Girls Cross Country team secured the top spot in the girls championship race. Jazleen Mahlherek-Osorio played a pivotal role, leading the Trojans with an impressive time of 19:03 and securing an 11th place finish.
Ella Hagen from Summit High School in Breckinridge, Colorado took first overall individually, clocking a time of 17:55. Other top local girls runners were Sydney Drevlow from Hopkins taking 7th (18:45), Caitlyn Osanai of Robbinsdale Armstrong taking 22nd (19:40), and April Watson from Maple Grove taking 28th (19:46).

DANIEL GUSTAFSON Coldwell Banker.On the boys side, Clay Shively from Trinity Academy in Topeka, Kansas took first in the high school championship heat, finishing in a time of 15:23. The top local runners were Will Weber of Wayzata taking 10th (15:56), Cade Sanvik of Osseo placing 11th (16:02), and Hopkins’ Landon Hering taking 12th overall (16:03).

In this week’s CCX Sports Spotlight, John Jacobson profiles Wayzata boys’ soccer standout Charlie Piller. The senior midfielder is key player on an unbeaten 7-0-1 Trojans’ team that is currently ranked first in the state in Class AAA. Piller leads Wayzata in assists with seven and has also scored three goals. Piller was on the Trojans’ team last year that won the Class AAA state championship and is hoping that he and his teammates can win the title again this year. After high school, Piller hopes to play college soccer at the Division I level.
