Trojans celebrate junior tight end Jack Simon as he receives word his cancer is in remission
Highlights of the Wayzata versus Roseville game. Head Coach Lambert Brown was all smiles after the game on Thursday evening for two reasons.
First, the Trojans had just cruised to a season opening victory against Roseville. Second, and more importantly, junior tight end Jack Simon had received word earlier in the day that his cancer is in remission. “The best part of the night, and the biggest was the reality that Jack Simon found out that he was cancer free tonight.”
Brown continued, “Football is awesome, but for Jack to have all these amazing people in his life and for him to have such influence on all those people, that’s what it’s really all about–all those people cheering at the end and the excitement for Jack and Jack’s fight. That is 100% the most important thing tonight.”
The stirring tribute from coach to player capped a strong night for the Trojans as Wayzata scored early and often against the Raiders.
Junior Carter Olson rushed for a 1 yard touchdown to put the Trojans on the board early in the first quarter.
Senior Noah Rychlick and the Trojan defense sacked William DeVries and made Roseville punt their first possession from deep in their own territory.
Moments later junior quarterback Cole Heilbrun would toss a 38 yard touchdown completion to Eli Lenort to make it 14-0 with 5 minutes remaining in the first.
Trojan senior place kicker Nate Stueve added a 32 yard field goal to make it 17-0 early in the contest.
Cole Heilbrun hit Eli Lenort on a slant from midfield and Lenort raced past the Raider defense for a 50 yard touch down pass completion as it was all Wayzata early.
Roseville would answer with a 40 yard touchdown completion from QB William DeVries to junior wide receiver Collin Lutz to make it Wayzata 24, Roseville 13.
The Trojans responded as junior wide receiver Tyler Milkes would take the kickoff to the house for a 90 yard touchdown return behind the blocking of the kickoff team to make it Wayzata 31, Roseville 13 in the 3rd.
From there it was all Wayzata as the Trojans would add 3 more rushing touchdowns from Carter Olson, Omar Madkour, and Deyon Loveless.
Commenting on the game, Coach Brown was largely pleased with the performance, “Our line played well. Cole Heilbrun threw the ball well and our receivers did a good job. Our running backs, we had a bunch of guys running the ball hard. Our defense really did a good job of stepping up, responding, and finding ways to get off the field against some really good football players. It was a fun night and we are going to enjoy it.”
Wayzata is back in action at the home opener hosting Champlin Park on September 9th at Wayzata Stadium. CP lost to Woodbury 21-7 in their opening contest.

CCX Media: Wayzata Volleyball Wins 55th Straight Match From CCX Media: “The two-time defending state champion Wayzata volleyball team opened its 2022 season Thursday with a three-set sweep of Minnetonka, extending the Trojans’ winning streak to 55 matches. The Trojans fell behind 10-6 in the first set but outscored the Skippers 19-8 to close out the set and then won sets 2 and 3 by scores of 25-11 and 25-15. Wayzata won Class AAAA last season, finishing the year with a 34-0 record. Their next match is Monday against Rogers, a team they beat in the state tournament a year ago.”

CCX Media: “The Wayzata football team expects to be in the mix as one of the state’s top Class 6A teams again this fall. The Trojans finished 8-3 a year ago, losing a close game to St. Michael-Albertville in the state quarterfinals. The team returns ten starters from 2021, seven of them on defense. Among the key players returning for Wayzata are linebackers Chase Ullom and Noah Rychlick, defensive backs Alex Hart, Andrew Westermeyer and Zach Boutwell, and wide receivers Eli Lenort and Ford Griffith. Wayzata opens the season at Roseville September 1st.”

“The Wayzata volleyball team is coming off a state championship and unbeaten season.
But despite the loss of five key seniors, the Trojans are loaded with talent again this fall. Twins Olivia and Stella Swenson have both verbally committed to the University of Minnesota, senior libero Sophia Johnson is a Cal commit and Avery Jesewitz is the Trojans’ returning left-side hitter and is also a Division 1 recruit.
The team also expects big contributions from girls who didn’t see a lot of varsity playing time a year ago. Wayzata opens the season at home August 25th against Minnetonka.”

Lions down Fergus Falls 55-53
Providence Academy led wire to wire but survived a late threat by Fergus to win the Class AA Girls State Basketball Championship 55-53.
The Lions avenged a loss in the title game a year ago, earning the program its first state title since 2012. They entered the state tournament as the top seed in Class AA. The game was held March 19 from the University of Minnesota’s Williams Arena.
Providence led by as much as 11 points in the first half. The Owls continued to climb back and close the gap, bringing it to two points with just two minutes left in the game. This was the smallest point differential of the game since 14 minutes left in the first half.
Grace Counts. Photo Dan Gustafson. Junior Grace Counts got the Lions out to a strong start, scoring 13 points to go into halftime up 26-22. She finished with 17 points, 6 boards and 6 assists.
Maria Counts. Photo Dan Gustafson. Senior Maria Counts took over in the second half of the game. She dominated inside with 16 of her team-high 19 points coming after the break. Her incredible run to close the game out included scoring 10 of the Lions’ last 12 points. She also had 9 rebounds and 6 assists.
Maddyn Greenway. Photo Dan Gustafson. Eighth-grader and future phenom Maddyn Greenway came up with the crucial defensive rebound as the Owls made their bid to make it a one-score game. She was fouled and sent to the line. She went one-of-two from the stripe to stretch the lead back to five points. Greenway finished with 15 points.
Brooke Hohenecker and Emma Millerbernd also contributed to the game in crucial moments.
Providence shot 40-percent from the field and 69-percent from the line. They held a 36-30 advantage on the glass and forced 12 Owls turnovers. The Lions posted a 17-10 assist to turnover ratio.
The Owls got a huge performance from senior Ellie Colbeck who scored a game-high 41 points. She played the entire 36 minutes of the game, also pitching in 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

Your Wayzata Football Trojans (1-3) defeated the Minnetonka Skippers (1-3) in the annual Battle for the Bay Bell at Einer Anderson Stadium last Friday evening.
The Trojans used their rushing attack featuring Anthony Richmond and the Offensive Line to run over Minnetonka. Richmond rushed 36 times for 195 yards and two touchdowns behind the Wayzata Moving Company featuring Alec Rasmussen, Jaxon Nelson, Brian Glomstad, Brett Kelzenberg, Tyler Magnuson, Luke Bodine, and Jack Kinsey.

More pics at WayzataPhotography.com Other offensive leaders included QB Ryan Harvey who completed 8 passes on 14 attempts for 127 yards and 1 touch down. Luke Bodine had 4 catches for 72 yards, Jack Kinsey had 1 reception for 10 yards and a TD, Julian Diedrich had 2 receptions for 37 yards, and Hunter Berthiaume had 1 reception for 8 yards.
Jack Clausen had 6 tackles and a takeaway against Minnetonka. Defensively, and an aggressive defensive game plan by Coach Jordan Halverson kept the Skippers out of the End Zone all evening, “The boys did a really good job tonight, made some big plays, big turnovers–in the end zone by Eddie Beeninga it was really fun watching them play tonight.” Other team leaders included Jack Clausen with a takeaway and 6 tackles, Tommy Hamann with 6 tackles and 2 sacks, Drew Berkland with 11 tackles and 2 sacks, Drew Streeter with 3 tackles, and Fox Knutson with 3 tackles and 1 sack.
Eddie Beeninga intercepts a pass in the end zone against Tonka. The Wayzata Trojans move to 1-3 on the season and will host Shakopee (2-2) who absolutely drummed Stillwater last week 49-0 behind the play of QB David Bigaouette and running backs Trevon Lusian and Seth Bakken.

Last Friday night they played Eden Prairie well enough to win until the 4th quarter when the Eagles scored 3 touch downs to put the game out of reach. The Trojans were plagued by turnovers and penalties which makes it difficult to win against good teams.
“The defense played well enough for us to win tonight, we just need to finish,” stated Head Coach Lambert Brown. He added, “We need to continue to get better, and that starts with me.”
Julian Diedrich celebrates a 46 yard reception for touchdown. Trojan QB Ryan Harvey completed 10 passes for 193 yards and 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. RB Anthony Richmond rushed 20 times for 85 yards. Receiver Julian Diedrich caught 6 passes for 96 yards and a TD, and Drew Berkland caught 2 passes for 65 yards and a TD.
The Wayzata Trojans travel to Minnetonka (1-2) Friday.

After a delayed start to the season due to Coronavirus the Wayzata Girls Volleyball team moved to 3-0 as they defeated the St. Michael Albertville Knights at home on Wedensday, Oct. 14th.
Wayzata won: 25-23, 21-25, 26-24, 25-21
Olivia Swenson had 18 kills in the match against St. Michael Wayzata was resilient in the match as the Knights would repeatedly take a lead and the Wayzata Trojans would battle back to win the sets.
Head Coach Scott Jackson spoke with Wayzata.com after the match, “St. Michael, they have a great team. STMA is building a great program. We were fortunate to get out with the win.”
Jackson added, “It’s MEA, normally we are getting ready for playoffs, but right now we are really developing still. We lost a lot of talented seniors, there are some new pieces, we are really just putting our team together.”
Freshman Olivia Swenson had 18 kills, Katy Riviere had 10, Mel Goldstein and Sierra Moore had 7, Stella Swenson had 5, and Emma Goerger had 3.
Stella Swenson also had 40 sets, and 4 aces.

Hockey player Joe Adams, a resident of Wayzata and Boston College Hockey senior forward has “toiled tirelessly” in his efforts to help the Eagles reach the Frozen Four. The Frozen Four is College Hockey’s championship finals, similar to the Final Four put on by the NCAA Basketball Committee. According to a CBS Sports article published today, Joe has played in four games this season and has played a crucial role in helping BC win an impressive 104 games since they began playing together in 2004. Boston College will meet Notre Dame on Saturday night in Denver for the final game of the season. Watch for Joe to contribute if given the chance. We wish him luck!
