In the closing game of the regular season on Thursday, the Wayzata football team experienced a 30-18 defeat at the hands of Anoka.
During the second quarter, Cole Heilbrun connected with Tony Ley for a touchdown pass, and Thomas Theising’s successful field goal brought the Trojans closer with a halftime score of 21-10.
Wayzata mounted a comeback effort in the third quarter when Kyle Boutwell intercepted a pass and returned it for a 70-yard touchdown. A successful two-point conversion narrowed the score to 21-18. However, Anoka would have the last word, scoring the final nine points of the game.
Anoka’s quarterback, Peyton Podany, threw for over 300 yards during the game, and Zach Welch managed to score three touchdowns.
Anoka, with a season record of 6-2, will host East Ridge in their Class AAAAAA playoff opener next Friday night. On the other hand, Wayzata, with a season record of 2-6, is set to play at Forest Lake.
