“For the fifth straight year the Wayzata wrestling team advanced to the Section 5AAA team final to face power St. Michael-Albertville. The top-ranked Knights beat Wayzata 46-15 to advance to state for the 25th consecutive season. After the teams split the first four matches, the Knights won five straight from 132 pounds through 160 to build a 35-6 lead. Wayzata won three straight matches from 170 through 195 but it was too little too late as STMA will head back to the Xcel Energy Center to defend their state class AAA title.” From CCX Sports.

#3 ranked Wayzata Girls Basketball (18-2) defeats #1 Hopkins Royals (18-2) 55-53 at home. With just seconds left Abby Krzewinski dribbles the length of the floor and draws the foul; she stepped to the line and sank two free throws with .08 left to clinch the victory for the Wayzata Trojans. The rest of the team gets a stop and the bench erupts with excitement and enthusiasm from the hard fought win.
Brynn Senden scored 19 points, Sophie Hawkinson had 11 points, Shannon Fornshell had 9, Kate Amelotte & Grace Weber had 4 points each, and Jessica Oberlander had 2 points.
For Hopkins, Nu Nu Agara had 19 points, Taylor Woodson had 13, Liv McGill had 8, Erma Walker and Kelly Boyle had 4 points each, and London Harris had 3 points.
The last time Wayzata beat Hopkins was in the 2018-2019 season. The teams will likely meet again in Section play in the coming weeks.

The Wayzata boys hockey team lost top top-ranked Minnetonka 4-2 Thursday as the teams split their regular season series. Brittan Alstead scored on a rebound to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead in the first period but the Skippers scored the first three goals of the second period to take the lead for good. Luke Miller netted Wayzata’s second goal of the night on the powerplay, but Minnetonka scored on the next shift for the final goal of the night. John Stout scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Skippers who improved to 18-2-0 on the season. The Trojans, now winless in their past five games, dropped to 13-5-2.

Class A boys swimming power Breck/Blake beat Wayzata 69-33 Thursday at Breck School in Golden Valley. Henry Webb of Breck/Blake set a new pool record in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:45.82. The Bearstangs are six-time defending state champions in class A.

“The Hopkins gymnastics team defeated Wayzata 141.400 to 138.075 for the team’s fourth dual meet win of the season. Hopkins (4-0) also placed first in an invitational meet in Princeton last weekend. Hopkins junior Annabelle Speers won the bars, beam, and floor exercise to win the meet’s all-around title with a score of 36.800. NyahSymone Britt of Hopkins won the vault with a score of 9.400. The loss was the first of the season for Wayzata (3-1). It marked the first time Hopkins has defeated Wayzata in gymnastics since January 2009. The teams will be the favorites to advance to state at the Section 6AA meet Feb. 18 at Hopkins High School. Wayzata is the defending state champion in Class AA.” From CCX Media.

Tessa Johnson comes up short, Wayzata’s Kate Amelotte rebounds and gets it to Sophie Hawkinson for a three pointer. The Trojans (11-1-0) used a combination of stifling defense and outside shooting on offense to defeat previously unbeaten STMA (12-1-0) by a score of 54-44.
The Knights used a 2-3 zone defensively throughout the game, and lead 24-23 at the half as Wayzata struggled to adapt to the scheme.
Wayzata was able to keep phenom Tessa Johnson in check with help defense and always seemed to have a hand in her face.
Towards the middle of the 2nd half, things began to Wayzata’s way as the Trojans were able to secure defensive stops, get easy buckets on fast breaks, and shoot well from outside.
Wayzata’s execution was too much for the Knights, and late in the 2nd half with STMA trailing it became obvious the Trojans were destined to win this one.
Sophie Hawkinson scored 15 points with three field goals and three 3-pointers. Brynn Senden (Minnesota commit) had 11 points including two 3-pointers. Abby Krzewinski had 10 points, Kate Amelotte had 7 points, Jessica Oberlander has 4 points, and Ella Goodnature had 2.
For STMA, Tessa Johnson (South Carolina commit) had 15 points, Ja’Kahla Craft had 14 points including four 3-pointers, Abby Hoselton had 6 points, Kylie Diaz had 5 points, and Ava Haus had 2 points.
It’s a signature win for Head Coach Julie Stewart‘s club.
The Trojans travel to #1 ranked Hopkins (10-0) next Tuesday, January 17th at 7pm.

Maple Grove boys’ hockey team skated past top-ranked Wayzata to win a 4-3 thriller in the third round of the Premiere Holiday Classic in the Grove tournament at Maple Grove Community Center. Maple Grove scored a pair of goals in the latter part of the second period to break a scoreless tie and take a 2-0 lead into the third period. The final period was a wild one.
Wayzata scored twice in 25 seconds midway through the period to tie the game 2-2. Just over a minute later, Maple Grove’s Blake Steenerson tallied twice in 16 seconds to restore a two-goal advantage for the Crimson at 4-2. Brooks Gengler scored with 3:24 to play to pull the Trojans within 4-3 but they couldn’t get the equalizer and Maple Grove held on for the win.
Maple Grove won all three of its games at the Classic in the Grove event to improve to 9-2-0 this season. Wayzata is now 8-1-1.
