National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists Announced for Wayzata High School’s Class of 2009

Wayzata High School proudly unveils its distinguished list of National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists for the graduating class of 2009. The following outstanding students have earned this prestigious recognition: Shivani Bhatt, Lu Chen, Minna Chen, Nancy Chen, John Hawthorne, Andrew Heiring, Richard Hermann, Lucy Hesby, Constantine Kifalu, Katie Menk, Arpit Panda, Francesca Parente, Noah Rosenthal, Anton Strezhnev, and Samuel Whitehead.

To qualify for the esteemed National Merit Scholarship program, students must excel in the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). This rigorous examination identifies students with exceptional academic promise and sets the stage for their potential inclusion in the National Merit Scholarship program.

Notably, Anton Strezhnev achieved a remarkable feat by securing a perfect score on the PSAT, distinguishing him as the sole student in Minnesota to achieve this exceptional milestone.

As semifinalists, these high-achieving students will progress to the next phase of the National Merit program, positioning themselves as potential recipients of scholarships from the program. The eagerly awaited scholarship announcements are scheduled for next spring, offering these outstanding individuals the opportunity to further their academic pursuits with well-deserved financial support.

The average ACT score of Wayzata Public Schools students continues to be above state and national composite averages.In 2008, 649 students took the ACT exam and earned an average composite score of 25.01 on the test. The state average in 2008 was 22.6 and the national average was 21.1. In the area of English, Wayzata Public Schools students earned an average score of 24.96 compared to 21.9 for the state average; in the area of mathematics, the WPS score was 24.96 compared to 22.6 for the state average; in reading, the WPS score was 25.97 compared to the state average of 23; and in science the WPS score was 24.74 compared to the state average of 22.6.

In 2007, 650 Wayzata Public Schools students took the ACT exam and earned an average composite score of 25 compared to the state average of 22.5.

According to the local results, 91 percent of WPS students are determined to be ready for college English composition, 72 percent are ready for college algebra, 78 percent are ready for college social science, 57 percent are ready for college biology and 50 percent are meeting the standards in all four areas, compared with 32 percent at the state level. These percentages are based on the ACT established benchmark scores for designated college courses, which is the minimum score needed on an ACT subject area test to indicate a 50 percent chance of obtaining a B or higher in the corresponding college course. For English composition, the benchmark is 18, for algebra it is 22, for social science it is 21 and for biology it is 24.

The integrity of the Classic Lake Conference, comprising Wayzata, Minnetonka, Edina, Hopkins, and Robbinsdale school districts, is under threat due to recent budget shortages in Robbinsdale. These developments have raised concerns about the potential dissolution of the conference, presenting scheduling challenges for the participating teams and the Wayzata School District.

Robbinsdale’s financial difficulties, stemming from budget shortfalls affecting its schools and activities, pose a significant risk to the continued existence of the Classic Lake Conference. According to Minnesota State High School League (MHSHL) rules, a conference must have a minimum of five schools to maintain its status. If Robbinsdale’s funding challenges persist, the conference may face disbandment, and each school could be reassigned to a new conference.

The origins of the Classic Lake Conference trace back to the early ’90s when all five schools—Wayzata, Minnetonka, Edina, Hopkins, and Robbinsdale—left the Lake Conference.

Efforts to preserve the Classic Lake Conference have included invitations extended to other schools to join its ranks. However, these invitations have encountered a lukewarm reception from neighboring school districts. While the potential addition of Osseo/Maple Grove and Eden Prairie is considered, the lack of enthusiasm from other local districts complicates the conference’s quest for sustainability.

In the face of these challenges, the fate of the Classic Lake Conference hangs in the balance, and stakeholders are closely monitoring developments to determine the future landscape of high school athletics in the region.

In its sixth consecutive year, China Day, hosted by the University of Minnesota (U of M) China Center, is set to welcome nearly 900 middle and high school students to Northrop Auditorium on Friday, April 18. The event aims to engage students in discussions about the upcoming summer Olympics in Beijing while promoting the study of the Chinese language. This year, the China Center is bringing in the largest number of students ever for this annual event.

Scheduled to kick off at 9:00 a.m. at Northrop Auditorium, located at 84 Church St. S.E., Minneapolis, China Day will feature a diverse range of presentations covering various aspects of Chinese culture, as well as insights into the athletes participating in the Beijing Olympics.

Participating schools include Blake School, Breck School, Minneapolis South High School, Minnetonka High School, St. Paul Central High School, Wayzata High School, Saint John’s Preparatory School, Highland Park, and Patrick Henry High School.

The event, sponsored by the Office of the President and the Institute of Global Studies, will follow a structured program:

• 9:00 – 9:20 a.m.: A slideshow featuring Chinese language classes in local schools.
• 9:20 – 10:20 a.m.: Welcoming remarks by Meredith McQuaid, Dean of the Office of International Programs, and Dr. Yongwei Zhang, Director of the China Center. Keynote address by Professors Chris Isett and Doug Hartmann on the upcoming Olympics in China.
• 10:25 – 11:05 a.m.: Olympics-themed Jeopardy game with categories including facts, sports, athletes, culture, and venues.
• 11:05 a.m. – 12:20 p.m.: Lunch with a prize drawing and a photo exhibit showcasing Chinese cities.
• 12:20 – 12:40 p.m.: Student representatives from each school will discuss their Chinese language projects.
• 1:00 p.m.: Conclusion with students returning to their respective buses.
