Trojans win Class AAAA Section 6 Title in Front of a Capacity Crowd

Tickets for the Wayzata boys basketball Class AAAA Section 6 were in such demand they sold out a day in advance, and many attendees were turned away at the doors to the athletic entrance by signs that indicated “Sold Out.”

At least a dozen photographers and videographers lined the baseline of the court, and two full pep bands–one from Wayzata and one from Hopkins were in attendance.

The crowd helped to create an electric atmosphere that helped your Wayzata Trojans (27-1) jump out to an early lead against Hopkins (23-6) as Wayzata played stellar defense, grabbed rebounds and got the ball to the open man on offensive possessions.

Hopkins Caught Off Guard

The Trojans figuratively punched the Royals in the mouth right from the start in seemingly all facets of the game, and Hopkins wasn’t ever able to recover.

Securing this victory allowed Wayzata to avenge their sole loss of the season, which occurred on January 23rd at the Royals Athletic Center by a score of 80-69.

Team First Basketball on Display

Unselfish basketball, epitomized by consistently passing to the open man for the perfect shot, stood as a cornerstone of Wayzata’s strategy and one of the primary reasons they were able to outplay Hopkins easily.

“Our guys moved the ball really well tonight and it was what created so many great shots.  We have so many guys that can put the ball in the hoop and when we share it like that it is scary.  Every single one of our guys gave it their all tonight and that is what it takes in March,” stated Head Coach Bryan Schnettler after the game.

As one example, Brayden Sandman hit a 3-pointer in the corner after what seemed to be a dozen passes from one side of the perimeter to the other to make it 27-12 with 10:23 remaining in the first half.

Another example includes this Wyatt McBeth 3-pointer off the assist from Isaac Olmstead to make it 41-18 with 6:41 remaining in the first.

McAndrew scores 40 points to lead Wayzata

Jackson McAndrew went off against the Royals, scoring an eye-opening 40 points in the contest.

One illustration of McAndrew’s scoring talent was highlighted when teammate Nicklaus Hein passed the ball to Jackson, who was left completely unguarded in the lane, leading to an effortless dunk.

McAndrew scored from seemingly everywhere on the court, including 5 makes from behind the 3-point line, a number of layups and mid-range jump shots as well as a number of free throws.

Christian Wiggins had 20 points including this 3-pointer from the right wing to make it 79-61 with 9:10 remaining in the 2nd half.

Wiggins would finish with 20 points for the Trojans including 9 points from the charity stripe and two 3-pointers.

A bit of foul trouble in the 2nd half

As indicated, the Trojans exhibited a strong performance across the board save for a hiccup early in the second half where they struggled with foul discipline, accruing 9 team fouls in relatively quick succession.

This lapse in control not only tested their defensive strategies but also inadvertently altered the game’s rhythm by slowing the tempo of the game down, allowing the Royals to get within 12 points.

Regardless, Wayzata was able to avoid allowing the double-bonus penalty to impact the game towards the end as the Trojans continued to build on their lead towards the end of the second half.

Sharp shooting

Wayzata scored a mind boggling eighteen 3-pointers in the contest for 54 points from behind the arc, or said another way more than half the team’s points!

As stated previously, McAndrew led Wayzata with 40 points, and Wiggins added 20 points.

Isaac Olmstead had 18 points, Wyatt McBeth finished with 9 points, Ben Shaffer had 6 points, Brayden Sandmann had 5, Evan Johnson scored 3, Drew Nepsatd had 2, as did Daniel Grubesic.

Hopkins was led by Anthony Smith with 31 points and Jayden Moore who finished with 22 points.

“That was a great win for us, but we aren’t done yet.  We have a week to keep getting better before the state tournament,” stated Coach Schnettler.

The Wayzata Boys’ Basketball (26-1) team clashed with the Edina Hornets (16-12) last night at Wayzata High School in Class 4A Section 6 Semi-Final play.

In the opening half, the Trojans relied on precise long-range shooting to create and maintain a lead over Edina.

Isaac Olmstead drained five 3-pointers, while Jackson McAndrew added four of his own before halftime.

In the 2nd half, Christian Wiggins and Ben Shaffer continued the 3-point shooting scoring two 3-pointers each.

Wyatt McBeth also contributed greatly in the 2nd half scoring 4 field goals and hitting 4 free throws.

Edina threatened the Trojans early in the 2nd half, but solid defense by Wayzata kept the Hornets at bay.

McAndrew led all scorers with 24 points, Olmstead had 19, McBeth had 16 points, and Shaffer had 13 points.

Christian Wiggins finished with 8 points, Brayden Sandmann had 2 points, Daniel Grubesic had 2 points, and Drew Nepstad had 2 points.

Edina finished the season 16-12 and place 3rd in the Lake Conference.

Daniel Molhoek had 20 points for the Hornets, Josiak Coleman had 16, Billy DeMars had 13 as did Waylon Erlandson.

Wayzata will host Hopkins (23-5) on Tuesday night at Wayzata High School at 7pm.

The Wayzata Athletic Department is expecting a capacity crowd, so get your tickets and seats early.

“On senior night, the Wayzata boys basketball team used a flurry of threes midway through the second half and a balanced scoring effort to defeat Minnetonka 103-88. The Trojans had five players score in double figures. Creighton commit Jackson McAndrew led the way with 21 points, while fellow senior Ben Shaffer also put up 20 points. Wyatt McBeth (16), Brayden Sandmann (15), and Isaac Olmstead (13) all cracked double digits in scoring as well. Andy Stefonowicz led the Skippers on the night with 24 points. Wayzata capped the regular season with a 25-1 record and a Lake Conference title. The Trojans will open the Section 6AAAA tournament against the winner of Edina and Armstrong on Friday.” Via CCX Media

In a thrilling basketball matchup at Wayzata High School on Friday night, the #2 ranked Wayzata Trojans Boys Basketball Team (15-1) secured a solid 92-80 win against a very good #8 ranked Minneapolis Washburn (14-2) team.

Washburn, determined to capitalize on Wayzata’s recent upset loss to Hopkins, started the game by jumping out to an early lead on offense and forcing Trojan turnovers on defense.

The game plan for Washburn was to slow the Trojans by doubling Jackson McAndrew in the paint as much as possible; however it simply didn’t stop the Creighton recruit.

McAndrews, a 6’9″ senior and Christian Wiggins, a 6’4″ sophomore guard played pivotal roles in the win tonight, as did all the Trojan players.

During the second half, McAndrews achieved a career milestone by scoring his 1,000th point on a deep three-pointer from the wing.

This noteworthy moment originated from a Wiggins shot block off the glass, part of a crucial 7-point swing for Wayzata during the contest.

Head Coach Bryan Schnettler talked about the accomplishment after the game, “Jackson has worked very hard to become the player that he is. It is really cool to see how excited his teammates and our community were about him scoring his 1,000th point. We can’t wait to see him finish his senior year in a big way.”

Wiggins kept Wayzata in the game in the first half seemingly single handedly by contributing from the three-point line, the free-throw line, and through relentless hustle plays including tips, steals, blocks, and more.

In the second half, one of several steals by Wiggins occurred at 11:57, leading to a foul and additional made free throws extending Wayzata’s lead to 59-54.

Schnettler also talked about Wiggins after the game, “Christian continues to get better everyday.  We love how hard he works!”

As indicated, Washburn was scrappy and anytime Wayzata would build a lead of 8, 10, or 12 points throughout the game, Washburn consistently fought back, narrowing the gap to four or six points whether it was a Cooper Carlson 3-pointer or Kyle Jorengsen hitting clutch free throws.

Many of the other Trojans added key minutes and buckets.

Drew Nepstad made a significant impact with a deep three-pointer and a skillful finger-tip roll midway through the second half.

Wyatt McBeth contributed with hustle plays and key buckets throughout the game as well.

Evan Johnson showcased his shooting prowess with consecutive three-pointers from different corners of the floor, expanding Wayzata’s lead to 72-60 with 7:23 remaining in the second half.

At the end, the Trojans were able to pull away by breaking the Miller press utilizing tactics like this give and go between Wyatt McBeth and McAndrew:

Coach Schnettler offered his praise after the game and challenged his team to be even better, “When we moved the ball on O and made the extra pass we looked good on offense tonight.  We have a very talented group and if we can continue to be willing to give up good shots for great shots we will get even better.”

He also indicated there were times he’d like to see more on the defensive end of the floor, “We need to be more consistent with our defense, we had too many lapses tonight and good teams like Washburn make you pay for that.”

McAndrew finished with 31, Wiggns had 25, Isaac Olmstead had 8, Wyatt McBeth and Drew Nepstad each had 7, Evan Johnson had 6, and Brayden Sandmann & Michael Saphir each finished with 2 points.

Leaders for Washburn included Cooper Carlson with 23, Kyle Jorgensen with 19, Charlie Gustafson with 16, and Blake Bergren with 14.

The Trojans host STMA (8-8) on Tuesday at WHS, and Washburn travels to Minneapolis Edison (3-13) Monday evening.

The atmosphere at Hopkins High School was electrifying Tuesday night, with a sizable crowd witnessing a thrilling clash between the #8 ranked Royals (11-3) and the previously unbeaten Wayzata Trojans Boys Basketball team. (14-1).

The Royals proved difficult in the first half as they built a 46-36 lead over the Wayzata at the half.

As the second half unfolded, the Hopkins continued their dominance, extending their lead to 60-40 with 13:24 remaining on the clock.

However, Wayzata mounted a spirited comeback, fueled by a pair of three-pointers from Christian Wiggins.

The Hopkins lead dwindled to 68-64 with just 6 minutes left in the game.

Ultimately Hopkins was too much for the Trojans as they scored a noteworthy 80-69 upset.

This victory marked the first loss for the defending 4A state champions and top-ranked Trojans, who were nationally ranked at #22.

Jackson McAndrew led Wayzata with 14 points. Christian Wiggins and Ben Shaffer each added 13. Drew Nested and Isaac Olmstead had 8 points each, Wyatt McBeth had 4, Brayden Sandmann and Daniel Grubesic each scored 3 points, Adam Dehm had 2, and Evan Johnson had 1.

Davie Hart had 22 and Anthony Smith scored 20 points to lead the Royals.

The Trojans host Minneapolis Washburn Friday night at 7pm at Wayzata High School.

Win puts Wayzata’s record at 7-0 on the season

In a dominant performance by the Wayzata boys’ basketball team over the Burnsville Blaze (1-3), the Trojans secured a resounding 89-40 victory, led by standout performances from sophomore guard Christian Wiggins and senior guard Ben Shaffer. The game, held at the Wayzata Field House, showcased the dynamic duo’s scoring prowess and the Trojans’ overall dominance throughout the game.

From the opening tip-off, the team demonstrated exceptional synergy, with precise ball movement and sharpshooting skills–scoring thirteen 3-pointers for 39 points on the evening. Head Coach Bryan Schnettler talked about his teams play after the game, “Our guys played hard tonight and we are improving.  We have a talented group who has a chance to continue to improve.“

Wiggins, the sophomore sensation, showcased his scoring versatility, contributing 16 points with a combination of impressive drives to the basket and long-range shooting including four 3-pointers. Schnettler spoke about the sophomore after the game, “Christian is extremely talented and with his ability to shoot, defend, and create for his teammates that sky is the limit.” It’s the second time in as many games Christian scored 16 points, achieving the feat in Trojans win against Chaska earlier in the week.

Senior guard Shaffer, a seasoned leader on the team, mirrored Wiggins’ performance with an equally impressive 16 points, displaying his experience and skill on the court and also shooting four 3-pointers during the contest. Schnettler stated, “Ben shoots it well and is tough to keep out of the paint.  We have a really fun group.“

The Trojans’ offensive showcase extended beyond the leading scorers, with the entire team executing plays seamlessly and capitalizing on scoring opportunities.

As indicated, Wiggins and Shaffer scored 16 points. Jackson McAndrew had 12 points, Isaac Olmstead had 12 points on four 3-pointers, Brayden Sandmann had 7, Ryan Mann had 5, Michael Saphir and Drew Nepstad had 4 each, Jack Simon had 3, Nick Nordaune had 2, and Adam Dehm had 1 point.

Wayzata travels to the East Ridge Tournament next week for 2 games on Thursday December 28th and Friday December 29th.
