In a thrilling matchup over at the Wayzata Field House, the Wayzata TrojansGirls Basketball Team (3-2) faced off against the Prior Lake Lakers (1-4) for a lively night of non-conference action.
Things kicked off on a high note when Sophie Hawkinson hit a nothing but net three-pointer to start the game, sparking a 9-0 run for the Trojans.
The Trojans show good patience and ball movement as Sarah Hyde drifts to the corner and drains a 3-pointer off the Kate Amelotte assist at about the 8 minute mark in the 1st half.
The Lakers made a comeback in the first half, including scoring five three-pointers with Bree Bowman sinking three, Joselyn Horner tossing in one, and Anna Van-Helden adding another. That put Prior Lake ahead 30-29 as both teams hit the locker room at halftime.
The Trojans turned up the heat in the second half, locking in some solid defense and impressive teamwork to score a win against the Lakers.
Wayzata played it smart with a beefed-up lineup featuring 10 players, a step up from the Lakers’ 7. Their fresh legs and solid defense shut down Bowman in the second half, keeping the Lakers’ top scorer from making any more baskets. The Trojans also contained Laker Brooklynn Holberg to 9 points in the contest, Prior Lakes’ second leading scorer.
Head Coach Julie Stewart had this to say after the game, “We had a few turnovers that lead to a run by Prior Lake in the first half. We were able to build a lead in the second half because of our depth. Defensively we are getting better. We were able to maintain pace and intensity for 36 minutes.
I’m proud of the girls. All and all I thought this was a great team win for us. We had many improvements and multiple things we can build on.”
For Wayzata fans in attendance, it was fun watching this young crew continue to come together on the court. They were dishing out assists left and right, showing off some serious teamwork. It was one of those memorable nights that Wayzata basketball enthusiasts won’t forget anytime soon.

Wayzata 75, Maple Grove 40 as Trojans move to 2-0 on the season
Your Wayzata TrojansBoys Basketball Team looks like a squad ready to make a deep run into the state basketball playoffs. It’s the first week of the season.
Christian Wiggins scores a 4 point play for Wayzata.
Everyone is talking about the offensive weapons that Wayzata has as they enter the season, including but not limited to Jackson McAndrew and Christian Wiggins. The thing that stuck out tonight to this sports reporter was the Trojans defense–it was stifling.
Early in the contest Wayzata kept Maple Grove from getting comfortable with that stifling defense. The Trojans hardly relented the whole game.
Isaac Olmstead dishes to Jackson McAndrew on a fast break in the first half.
The Crimson had 3 field goals and 10 free throws for their scoring in the first half. Fans in attendance who looked up at the scoreboard at halftime read Wayzata 41, Maple Grove 16.
Seemingly every pass from Maple Grove player to Maple Grove player was tipped or threatened to be tipped. Wayzata players closed out with hands extended while chopping their feet to prevent a drive past by the offense. The Trojans switched from player to player in what can only be characterized as a finely tuned defensive machine.
.In the same way almost every pass was deflected or contested, almost every shot attempt by Maple Grove was contested or deflected. There was seemingly always a hand up in the shooting path of the Crimson. All these actions made the visiting team alter their shots and kept them from scoring.
126 Benton in Wayzata is nearing completion, built by Custom One Homes.
Of course there was offensive prowess on display tonight as well. Two dunks from Jackson McAndrew and two dunks from Christian Wiggins that brought the crowd to its feet–all four times.
There was also very good shooting, passing, and moving with and without the ball throughout the night. Wayzata players also cheered for each other throughout the whole game, which was awesome to see.
Leaders for the team tonight included Jackson McAndrew with 26 points, Christian Wiggins with 12 points, Brayden Sandmann with 8 points, Drew Nepstad with 8 points, and Evan Johnson and Wyatt McBeth with 5 points a piece.
Head Coach Bryan Schnettler was pleased but still saw some room for improvement from the squad after the game, “Our defense has been good to start the year. There are still a lot of things to improve on, but the guys have played with great effort and that has been fun to see.”

Things didn’t go well from the start for Champlin Park as they travelled to Wayzata last evening. Case in point the Rebels drew a technical foul before the game started and prior to the jump ball by not starting the five players they indicated would start, something this sports reporter has never seen! Your Wayzata Girls Basketball team received two points and the ball out of bounds at mid-court to start the game.
Things didn’t go much better for the Rebels the rest of the game either. Your Wayzata Trojans jumped out to a 14-3 lead within a few minutes and never looked back.
Wayzata is young, with one senior, and handful of juniors and sophomores, and a group of talented young freshman contributing minutes and points.
Head Coach Julie Stewart emphasized the need for patience as the team gels early in the season, “Newcomers plus depth means it may take some time for chemistry and rhythm. It’s important for us to keep the standard high and pay attention to detail.”

The lone senior on the team Sam Johnson also contributed 7 points in the contest.
Stewart talked about the impact Allie Berns has had on the team recently, “Allie Berns has flipped a switch on pursuing rebounds consistently for us. Her performance last night was strong because she’s active and engaged on both ends. She’s working away from the ball and her teammates are capitalizing on it.”
Wayzata moves to 2-2 on the season and will face Prior Lake (1-2) at the Wayzata Fieldhouse on Friday at 7pm.

At approximately 08:53, MPD received a report of possible shots fired inside the #TargetCenter.
MPD, Hennepin County Sheriff, State Patrol, and EMS responded.
MPD worked with security and confirmed no shots were fired. The presence of a gun has not been confirmed.
Your publisher sitting in section 131 saw evidence of the fight spilling into his section, which appears to be 6 sections away from 121:
From our vantage point in section 131, dozens upon doznes of students in attendance were observed panicking and fleeing down the concourse, diving into bathrooms for refuge in response to an individual or individuals screaming that shots had been fired. https://t.co/BVlzVBUPS3
I was there. No gunshots just mass chaos on the concourse. Made me spill my cheese curds. Glad they gave me another. Saw a family kids crying. Saw people coming out of back hallways. Then they started running the other direction. Someone spilled their drink on me. π no gunshots
Sorry this happened to them. It is a horrifying video. It is supposed to be fun to be at these games. Now rules will be imposed that have nothing to do with kids who would never behave this way. The video looked like Attempted Murder. Stomping someone in the head.
