Things didn’t go well from the start for Champlin Park as they travelled to Wayzata last evening. Case in point the Rebels drew a technical foul before the game started and prior to the jump ball by not starting the five players they indicated would start, something this sports reporter has never seen! Your Wayzata Girls Basketball team received two points and the ball out of bounds at mid-court to start the game.
Things didn’t go much better for the Rebels the rest of the game either. Your Wayzata Trojans jumped out to a 14-3 lead within a few minutes and never looked back.
Wayzata is young, with one senior, and handful of juniors and sophomores, and a group of talented young freshman contributing minutes and points.
Head Coach Julie Stewart emphasized the need for patience as the team gels early in the season, “Newcomers plus depth means it may take some time for chemistry and rhythm. It’s important for us to keep the standard high and pay attention to detail.”
Scoring leaders for Wayzata during the contest included: Junior Allie Burns with 22 points including 8 of 8 from the stripe, sophomore Kate Amelotte with 13 points, junior Sophie Hawkinson with 14 points, and back in the rotation Ella Goodnature with 9 points. The lone senior on the team Sam Johnson also contributed 7 points in the contest.
Stewart talked about the impact Allie Berns has had on the team recently, “Allie Berns has flipped a switch on pursuing rebounds consistently for us. Her performance last night was strong because she’s active and engaged on both ends. She’s working away from the ball and her teammates are capitalizing on it.”
Wayzata moves to 2-2 on the season and will face Prior Lake (1-2) at the Wayzata Fieldhouse on Friday at 7pm.
