  • Minnesota Declares Ice Hockey as Official State Sport in 2009 with help from Wayzata’s John Berns

    March 31st, 2008

In a landmark decision, ice hockey was officially designated as the state sport of Minnesota in 2009. This recognition solidifies the sport’s deep-rooted cultural significance and passionate following in the state.

The journey to establish ice hockey as Minnesota’s official state sport began in 2007 when Senator Gen Olson introduced a bill (SF2313) with the aim of giving hockey this prestigious status. The proposal originated from the insightful suggestion of sixth-grade students at Minnetonka Middle School East. Motivated by their enthusiasm, the students tirelessly collected over 600 signatures in support of the bill.

Co-author Sen. David Tomassoni, with personal ties to the sport through his professional hockey career in Italy and participation in the 1984 Olympics as part of the Italian team, lent his support to the initiative. The House chief author, Rep. John Berns, spearheaded the corresponding bill (HF3771), gaining backing from fifteen co-authors.

Governor Tim Pawlenty, a hockey enthusiast himself, signed the bill into law, solidifying ice hockey’s status as the official state sport of Minnesota.

Representative John Berns of Wayzata played a pivotal role in sponsoring the measure. In a statement, Berns acknowledged that while there are higher priorities, the declaration of ice hockey as the official state sport underscores the sport’s significant role in the state’s identity and culture.

With this designation, Minnesota pays homage to its rich hockey history and the countless individuals, from dedicated players to passionate fans, who contribute to the sport’s enduring legacy in the North Star State.

  • Wayzata Resolves Duplex Lawsuit: New Plans Under Consideration

    March 21st, 2008

The City of Wayzata has reached a settlement in a lawsuit with Bob Ritter and Dennis Burgess over their proposed duplex development on Manitoba Avenue. The legal dispute arose as the city expressed a preference for single-family homes, while Ritter and Burgess envisioned multifamily housing for the location.

The city’s settlement entails a commitment to consider new plans submitted by Ritter and Burgess. This resolution provides an opportunity for both parties to revisit the development proposal, addressing the divergence in visions for the Manitoba Avenue project.

An interesting aspect of the settlement is the exemption of the buildings from height restrictions, leaving some in the community curious about the factors influencing this decision. This settlement contributes to a growing trend in new construction, where buildings seem to exceed the city’s height requirements more frequently than in recent memory.

In contrast, the Wayzata Bay Center, a prominent development in the area, adheres to a specified height, either four or five stories according to reports. The duplex plans for Manitoba Avenue, however, propose structures with notably high roofs, raising questions about the consistency of height regulations in the city.

Residents and stakeholders are invited to share their thoughts on this trend by posting comments below. The community’s input is crucial as Wayzata navigates through these development challenges, seeking a balance between growth and maintaining the character of the city.

As the city moves forward with the consideration of new plans, the Wayzata community remains engaged in shaping the trajectory of development in this vibrant Minnesota city.
