WAYZATA, Minn. — In a significant move to preserve and enhance the local history of Wayzata, the Wayzata Historical Society (WHS) is set to join forces with three other local history organizations, forming the new Lake Minnetonka Historical Society (LMHS) effective October 1, 2023.
In a letter to friends and supporters, Aaron Person, the current president of WHS, expressed both the bittersweet farewell to the WHS name and the excitement for the opportunities that lie ahead. The consolidation aims to strengthen the mission of collecting, preserving, and sharing local history for the communities around Lake Minnetonka.
The transition will not sever ties with Wayzata entirely. The Wayzata Depot Museum and Garden Railroad will continue its presence, and LMHS programs will still be hosted in Wayzata throughout the year. Furthermore, the current archives space in Wayzata will become the home of the consolidated LMHS archival collection.
Current WHS members are encouraged to volunteer with LMHS, and a Volunteer Open House is scheduled for Saturday, October 14, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Wayzata Community Room. This event provides an opportunity for interested individuals to meet the LMHS board, explore various volunteer opportunities, and learn about different committees within the new organization.
Aaron Person, who has served as the president of WHS for the past four years, expressed gratitude to all volunteers and board members who contributed to the Society’s success since its establishment in 1982. As he steps down, Person looks forward to a collaborative future with LMHS, ushering in a new era of preserving local history.
The new LMHS board of directors includes Lisa Stevens as President, Aaron Person as Vice President, Tom McCarthy as Treasurer, Liz Vandam as Secretary, along with Joanie Holst, Jeff Magnuson, Scott McGinnis, and Sharon Provost.
This merger marks a historic moment for the preservation of local heritage, ensuring a vibrant future for the shared history of Wayzata and the Lake Minnetonka region.
