Maple Grove rallied with Ellis Landry winning first place in diving, along with wins in the 100-butterfly from Maddie Hetland and in the 100-freestyle from Molly Menning. “The Wayzata boys swimming and diving team secured another Section 5AA championship by earning 660 points on Saturday, nearly double the amount of the next closest team, Irondale. It’s the 13th consecutive section title for the Trojans. Wayzata took first place in eight of the eleven swimming events and had two divers qualify for the Class AA state meet. Trojans’ junior Nathan Carr took first place in the 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke, and was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay team. Carr’s time of 48.70 second on the butterfly broke his previous section 5AA record and also broke the Minnetonka Aquatics pool record. Other Wayzata winners included Jerry Lou (200 IM), Noah Landry (50 Free), JP Kirchner (100 Free), Eli Kishish (500 Free), and the 200 Free Relay team. Osseo’s Mason Krings placed first overall in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.09 seconds. Maple Grove’s Pengxu Lor took first place in diving. March madness isn’t just for college hoops—it’s alive and well in our own backyard as Wayzata High School athletes prepare for an action-packed week of postseason competition.
The excitement kicks off on Tuesday, March 4, when the boys’ basketball team takes the court for the section quarterfinals against Armstrong at Wayzata High School. The Trojans beat Minnetonka last Friday 80-62 and are now 22-4-0 on the season. Wayzata is looking to keep the momentum going and advance deeper into the tournament, with a likely showdown in the Section title game against Hopkins on the horizon.
Also recently, Wayzata basketball standout Christian Wiggins etched his name into the record books on February 25, reaching the 1,000-point milestone in his high school career. The senior guard has been a key offensive force for the Trojans, showcasing his scoring ability with a mix of sharp shooting, strong drives to the basket, and clutch performances. Wiggins’ achievement is a testament to his dedication and hard work over the years, and his leadership will be crucial as Wayzata looks to make a deep playoff run. Fans can expect him to be a difference-maker as the Trojans push forward in the postseason.

On Thursday, March 6, the girls’ basketball team will battle Hopkins in the section final at home—a rare occasion, as it marks one of the first times in decades that Wayzata has hosted a section championship. Fans know this matchup well—when Wayzata and Hopkins meet, it’s always a battle. With a trip to the state tournament on the line, expect a packed gym and an electric atmosphere.
Wayzata will have to take on the size and skill of the Hopkins squad without senior leader and point guard Sophie Hawkinson, who is sidelined for the remainder of the season after undergoing ACL reconstruction surgery. Fellow Trojan Kate Amelotte has also missed the season with the same injury, leaving Wayzata without two key contributors.
Wayzata enters the game with a 23-4 record, while Hopkins stands at 23-5. Watch for Annika Kieser, Maren Day, Katie Kelzenberg, Allie Berns, Mallory McBeth, Elli Howard, Lindsay Harvey, and a deep roster of Trojans to step up as they take on the Royals with their eyes on a state tournament berth.
Meanwhile, Wayzata’s boys’ swim and dive team will make a splash at the state meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center, beginning Thursday and running through Saturday. These dedicated athletes have been putting in countless hours in the pool, and now, they’ll have their shot at state titles.
If the boys’ basketball team wins on Tuesday, they’ll have another game on Friday, March 7, with details yet to be determined. Expect the Trojan faithful to turn out in full force, ready to cheer them on.

Monday, October 14: Girls Tennis and Adapted Soccer Take the Stage
The week kicks off with Adapted Soccer, where Wayzata’s squad will travel to take on White Bear Lake Area in what promises to be a spirited matchup. This game is part of a season that’s been filled with energy and determination for the team. Later, the spotlight shifts to Girls Tennis, as the section individual tournament begins at Inner City Tennis. Wayzata’s top tennis players will look to advance through the competition in hopes of representing their school at the state level.
Tuesday, October 15: Section Soccer and Volleyball Showdowns
Tuesday brings one of the most exciting days of the week, with both the Boys and Girls Soccer teams competing in section games on their home turf. The boys take on Hopkins, while the girls face Rogers—both matchups will be held at Wayzata High School. With a spot in the section finals on the line, the teams will rely on their home crowd for support in these critical matchups. The Trojans have put together strong campaigns this season, and both teams are aiming to keep their playoff hopes alive with victories.
Also on Tuesday, Wayzata’s Girls Volleyball team hosts Minnetonka in what’s sure to be a fierce rivalry game. The volleyball team has been building momentum all season, and a win against Minnetonka would boost their standing as they prepare for sections. Meanwhile, the Girls Tennis Section Individuals Tournament continues, with top players competing to move forward in their brackets.
Wednesday, October 16: Trojans Football Head to Anoka
Midweek, Wayzata Football heads to Anoka for an away game as they look to secure a key win in the final stretch of the season. With the playoffs on the horizon, each game becomes more important for the Trojans. A victory against Anoka would be a strong step toward improving their playoff positioning. Expect a hard-fought game as Wayzata aims to maintain their focus and finish the regular season strong.
Thursday, October 17 & Friday, October 18: Soccer Section Finals Loom
If the Trojans’ soccer teams are victorious in Tuesday’s section games, both the Boys and Girls Soccer teams will be competing in the Section Finals later in the week. Dates and opponents are still to be determined, but the anticipation is already building. Both teams have shown tremendous talent and teamwork throughout the season, and making it to the section finals would bring them one step closer to a state tournament appearance.
Saturday, October 19: Swimming Stars Take the Stage
The week concludes with the Girls Swim and Dive team competing in the State True Team Meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Known for producing some of the fastest swimmers in the state, Wayzata’s swim team has its sights set on strong finishes in individual and relay events. The True Team format emphasizes overall team depth, so every swimmer’s performance will count as they look to bring home top honors.

“True Team State Champions! Thursday night was one for the record books, literally. The Trojans won True Team State with a whopping, new point record of 2447 points (Minnetonka was second with 1999 points and Edina was third with 1973.5 points). On top of that, the girls set four new meet records: the 200 Medley Relay (sophomore Carly Quast, junior Madison Preiss, sophomore Lexi Schaaf and junior Colleen Donlin), the 200 Freestyle Relay (senior Mary Whiting, Schaaf, junior Sarah Lingen and Preiss), Carly Quast in the 100 back, and the 400 Freestyle Relay (Whiting, senior Megan Larson, Lingen and Donlin). As if that weren’t enough, there were also four school records broken: the Medley Relay, Carly Quast in the 200 free (1:51.08) and the 100 back (55.00) and Lexi Schaaf in the 100 fly (56.17). Congratulations to the entire team for making the night a memorable one! Results, the Best Times/Scores and the Record Boards links have all been updated.
Star of the Meet: Congratulations to Tessa Anderson for winning Star of the Meet at True Team Sections. Tessa dove a season best score of 426.40 in the 11-dive list. She also swam the 50 breast on the Medley Relay in a time of 32.38 and the 50 free on the 200 Free Relay in a time of 26.80, earning her two swimming spots at True Team State. Way to go, Tessa!”
