Wayzata, MN — On a perfect autumn Sunday afternoon, October 19th, the City of Wayzata and the Wayzata Historical Society celebrated a defining moment in local sports history with the unveiling of a commemorative podia on Lake Street. The new historical marker honors the 1959 Wayzata High School boys basketball team—the scrappy underdogs who captured the Minnesota State Championship and the hearts of an entire town.
Dozens of community members, former players, family members, and local dignitaries gathered near the Lake Street overlook to witness the dedication ceremony. Coaches Jack Thurnblad and Norm Schroeder, along with several members of the 1959 team, were in attendance. The Wayzata Public Schools also took part in the celebration, proudly displaying the original 1959 championship trophy.

The podia itself is a permanent display that tells the remarkable story of how the Trojans, hailing from what was then a small rural school district on the edge of the metro, overcame long odds to become state champions. It features vivid photos, a tournament bracket, and historical context about the era. Visitors will learn that Wayzata had lost 24 straight games before Coach Thurnblad took over and began turning things around with a focus on discipline, strategy, and teamwork. With Norm Schroeder serving as advance scout, the team steadily improved—eventually shocking larger city schools in the state tournament.

The display also highlights the unprecedented community spirit that emerged during the championship run. Businesses closed, fans flooded Minneapolis’ Williams Arena, and banners lined Lake Street as the town rallied behind the team. The Trojans won the state title with a 55-41 victory in the championship game, bringing home Wayzata’s first-ever basketball crown in front of 18,501 fans.
The installation is part of an ongoing effort by the Wayzata Historical Society to preserve and share the city’s unique heritage. Located in a prominent spot along Lake Street, the podia invites residents and visitors alike to pause and remember one of the most inspiring chapters in Wayzata’s history.
“This team didn’t just win a championship,” said one speaker. “They brought a town together and showed what belief, heart, and hustle can accomplish.”
The day was filled with pride, laughter, and memories as a new generation was introduced to the legacy of the 1959 Trojans. And as Coach Thurnblad reminded his team back then—and as the podia now echoes—“Winners never quit.”
