Wayzata’s Second Call Fire Department was formed in 1934 to help morally, as well as financially, the Wayzata Fire Department. Today, the money donated from this organization is used primarily for unbudgeted fire equipment. Thanks to supporters in the Second Call Department, the Fire Department was able to purchase special equipment to respond to emergencies.

Wayzata Fire Department training excercise. Photo Dan Gustafson. The Wayzata Fire Department has a new weapon in fire fighting: a gel additive for the water in the department’s tanker truck.
The gel is added to the 1,000 gallons of water contained in the tanker, and is intended to increase the fire fighting ability and stickiness of the water. Assistant Fire Chief Kurt Klapprich indicated that the gel turns 1,000 gallons of water into the equivalent of 10,000 gallons of water. Additionally, the gel sticks to surfaces and therefore requires less water to be used at the scene of a fire.

Wayzata Fire Fighters test a new gel additive to contain fire on Monday evening. Photo Dan Gustafson. The Wayzata Fire Department tested the gel on Monday evening at Wayzata Public Works. It seemed to work quite effectively, as the crews that tested it had trouble relighting the test fire because the gel was sticking to everying and retarding the fire.

Jacob Bros, Fire Chief Kevin Klapprich, and Nicholas Bros pause for a photo. The brothers were recognized for fire safety recently. Photo Dan Gustafson. Brothers Jacob Bros, 12, and Nicholas Bros, 9, received an award from Wayzata Fire Chief Kevin Klapprich on Tuesday, August 2nd. The boys were recognized because they kept their fire hydrant by their house clear of snow all winter.
Chief Klapprich expressed his appreciation at Night 2 Unite, “By them having it all clear, it saves us time having to look for it, and dig it out. In that time it could be the difference in saving a house or not saving a house” He also went on to say, “if there is a fire, seconds count, and if they have to spend time digging out a fire hydrant, which can take a few minutes, there is a greater chance in losing the house.”
