Home Base/Bright Start Registration begins June 10

Registration for the summer 2009 Home Base/Bright Start will begin 7 a.m. June 10. Online registration requests can be submitted starting 7 a.m. June 19.

Home Base is a child daycare program taking place at all seven elementary schools in the Wayzata Public Schools district. It provides enrichment activities for children in a safe environment.

Before registering, parents can check the availability of space at the different schools. This can be done online.

The cost of Home Base is $34/day for full-time (40-52 days), $36.75/day for part-time (22-39 days), $38.50/day for flex-time (1-21 days) and $41 to add a day or drop-in.

Wayzata Senior Health Fair: Wednesday May 27

The 2nd annual Wayzata Senior Health Fair will be held next Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m at Wayzata Community Church, 125 Wayzata Blvd. E. The event is free and open to the public.

The keynote speaker for the fair, Dr. John Mielke, was featured as a Top Doctor in St. Paul/Minneapolis Magazine.

The event’s sessions will cover “Holistic Approaches,” “Hot to Talk Turkey About Again With Your Kids,” “Ethical Wills,” “Driving Assessment Program,” and “Support for the Caregiver with a Loved One with Alzheimer.” Attendees will have the opportunity to receive a seated massage, balance and blood pressure checks. Over 25 vendors will also be available with information on a variety of health topics.

Senior apartments, assisted living centers, and adult day centers in the area will receive free transportation to and from the event.

Wayzata Community Education – Let’s Make a Movie 2009 Registration

Wayzata Public Schools Community Education Services is offering their third annual “Quiet on the Set – Let’s Make a Movie” class from July 13-17 at Wayzata Middle School. The class is available for students in grades six, seven, and eight. Students will write and film an autobiography of their lives so far, and leave with a DVD of their own movie.

Registration for these classes is open and can be done online through the Wayzata Public School Community Education website or via mail. The cost of the classes is $110 and the tuition includes all necessary supplies. The maximum enrollment is 20 students and the spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Wayzata Women’s Chorus Spring Concerts Scheduled for May 16th and 17th, 2009

The Wayzata Women’s Chorus will be celebrating spring with two lively musical events which will include Celtic selections. On Saturday, May 16th its 24th Annual Spring concert will feature “Pie Jesu“, “Over the Rainbow” and “The Voice” to be presented at Wayzata Evangelical Free Church, 705 County Road 101 North, in Plymouth, MN at 7:00 p.m. Several instrumentalists will be performing with the Chorus.

On Sunday, May 17th there will be a repeat performance of the concert at Faith United Methodist Church, 2708 33rd Ave NE, St Anthony, MN at 7:00 p.m. Childcare and refreshments will be available at this concert only.

Other selections on the program will include “ABBA Forever”, “May It Be” and an audience sing-a-long of familiar Irish songs. We’re sure you and your family will enjoy these wonderful concerts.

Tickets are $15 for adults 18-64, $12 for student 6-17 and senior 65+. Children five and under are free. Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling Carla Erpelding at 612/788-6862.

The Chorus is directed by Carole Birch and accompanied by Mary Fadden. Founded in 1985, as part of the Wayzata Community Education, this award-winning chorus is composed of women of many ages who share a love of music and enjoy performing in a variety of venues. The chorus is well respected for the depth of their repertoire. They attained the Bronze Level at the Salzburg, Austria Choral competition in 1995 and participated in the North Carolina Music Festival in 1997. In June 2006, they performed in the Southern New England Music Festival in Boston.

WAYZATA PUBLIC SCHOOLS: Shakespeare class and play available through Community Education

Wayzata Public Schools Community Education department is offering a chance to learn more about Shakespeare and attend the Wayzata High School production of “Much Ado About Nothing.”

The Shakespearian class will be held April 7 with a second class planned on May 5 to learn more about the play “Much Ado About Nothing.” The WHS performance is scheduled for April 23, 24 and 25 and is free for seniors age 62 and older.

Shakespeare’s language and references are difficult to read, the stories are over 400 years old … yet world-wide, he is referenced, studied, known. Join us as we explore Shakespear as the “father” of how we define humanity.

While we will look at this topic through his plays, we will focus particularly on the Wayzata High School Spring production of “Much Ado About Nothing.” After this class, you will be encouraged to read the play, “Much Ado About Nothing,” attend the High School production April 23 – 25, and then join us for the follow-up class “Much Ado About Nothing … or Something”.

There are no discounts for this class. You need not participate in all three offerings, h owever, sign up for both classes and get a super discount, see details below! Joan Potter is Director of Drama at Wayzata High School.
