Andrew Humphrey announced at the November 5th, 2008 Wayzata City Council meeting that Irene Stemmer has been named the 2008 Citizen of the Year by the City of Wayzata. The Council took a 10 minute break to have light refreshments to celebrate the award.
Stemmer is the Chairperson of the Historic Preservation Board in Wayzata and was completely caught off guard by the award. “I can’t believe that I didn’t know one single thing about this. That’s very nice of you to do. I’m a little bit taken back, it’s a real honor.”

Just in case you need a reminder, today is General Election day in Wayzata, MN. Besides the obvious presidential race, we in Wayzata have to select a new Mayor. Ken Willcox is running unopposed for that position. Additionally, we have to elect two of three candidates running for the open City Council seats: Mary Bader, Andrew Mullin, and Tom Tanner are all running.
In speaking with Sandy Langley, Communications Director with the City of Wayzata early Tuesday morning, she said that “there has been a landslide of people”.
The polls are open in Wayzata from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm this evening. For a sample of what the ballot will look like when you get there, click here.

The City of Wayzata is accepting applications for positions on the Planning Commission, Heritage Preservation Board (HPB), and Housing & Redevelopment Authority (HRA). Applications can be found by clicking this link: CAB Application.
In ongoing discussions, the registered owners of the Superior Stop, Dean Vlahos and Craig Oberlander, alongside their holding company, Wayzata Circle LLC, are engaged in talks with the City of Wayzata concerning the Superior Stop gas station located on the west edge of the Wayzata Bay Center.
Recent reports indicate that the City of Wayzata is considering condemnation as a means to facilitate the sale of the property, allowing Presbyterian Homes to proceed with its redevelopment plans for Wayzata Bay Center.
Interestingly, Dean Vlahos revealed that Tom Petters had previously been involved in the ownership but resigned his shares in Wayzata Circle LLC following his arrest in early October on federal fraud charges.
Vlahos expressed his long-standing plan to transform the property into a restaurant. Wayzata.com had previously reported on the Wayzata City Council’s closed session meeting regarding the Superior Stop. Al Orson, Wayzata City Manager, noted, “The [redevelopment agreement] is set up on the basis that the city will use condemnation to acquire the gas station.”
Litigation may arise if an agreement between the City and Wayzata Circle is not reached, although neither party is currently commenting on the prospect of legal action.
With the winter season upon us, City of Wayzata workers are busy reading the skating rink and warming house at Klapprich Park, where hockey and skating opportunities abound.
City staff will promptly announce when the Klapprich Park ice rink is open to the public, ensuring residents stay informed about the available skating hours.
Once open, the park’s ice rink welcomes enthusiasts with the following operating hours:
An attendant is present during all open hours to assist visitors, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.
It’s important to note that the rink may close due to adverse weather conditions, with daily determinations.
Stay informed by checking the message board at the entrance to the Field on Wayzata Blvd for updates on closures.
As an additional note, Klapprich Park offers more than just a vibrant ice rink.
Nestled in a picturesque setting, the park provides a welcoming environment for families and individuals to enjoy outdoor activities, including scenic trails, play areas, and open spaces.
For safety reasons, please refrain from using the rink when equipment is resurfacing the ice.
The Wayzata City Council Candidate Forum is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, October 28th, starting at 7:00 pm and concluding at 9:00 pm.
The event, moderated by Jeff Lambert, provides a crucial opportunity for community members to engage with the candidates, pose questions, and voice concerns regarding the city’s direction prior to the upcoming election.
Ken Willcox, running unopposed for the position of Mayor, recently participated in an interview to provide voters with insights into his candidacy.
For the City Council race, where three candidates are vying for two seats, interviews with Mary Bader, Andrew Mullin, and Tom Tanner have been conducted and are accessible by clicking on their respective names.
Congressman Jim Ramstad was honored by the Wayzata Chamber of Commerce as the 2008 Person of the Year on October 16th.
The event was held at the plush accommodations that is the Wayzata Country Club in front of a full house.
Master of Ceremonies was Ramstad’s best friend Greg Rye, who Ramstad affectionately called “Rooster,” and “the little brother he never had.”
A number of prominent people from the area spoke about Ramstad’s many accomplishments for the City of Wayzata, the people of Minnesota, and the Nation.
Rye read aloud a letter from President George W. Bush that arrived that morning.
Here is an excerpt, “Congratulations on being honored by the Wayzata Area Chamber of Commerce as the 2008 Person of the Year. I know your family, friends, and colleagues are very proud of your accomplishments. I appreciate your hard work and dedication in serving your fellow citizens. Our nation is deeply indebted to the men and women who devote their lives to public service. Laura and I send our best wishes for continued success. May God bless you, and may God bless America.”
Rye went on to read a letter from Minnesota Governer Tim Pawlenty, who indicated that, “it is my honor to congratulate Congressman Jim Ramstad on being named 2008 Person of the Year. In Minnesota, only Sid Hartman can claim he has more personal friends than Jim Ramstad. However, just like everyone in the room today, I am honored to call Jim my friend. Jim has touched countless lives during his career in public service, but it is his unselfishness and compassion for helping people which makes him truly deserving of this honor…”
Kathryn Ramstad, Jim’s wife, talked about Jim’s commitment to family and how his family helped him succeed in politics, “…it’s always been a family affair, not out of duty, but definitely out of love for one another. Jim really guards his time with his family. He could be speaking every weekend at an event, but really most weekends you will find him after the game on Saturday having lunch with Marv… Sunday you will always find us having lunch with our family in Wayzata somewhere, and Sunday afternoons you will find Jim & Marv either watching football, basketball, baseball, whatever it might be all afternoon. Jim really does live his values and faith, family and friends. He puts them first in his life.”
Ramstad spoke about his affection for Wayzata after the presentations by Rye and the others. “…I am truly overwhelmed as I stand here before you today…” He continued, “I am the luckiest person in the world to have all of you in my life, thank you very much for this tremendous award today. It is truly gratifying.”
Ramstad told a story of how he arrived at the University of Minnesota in 1965 and asked a friend where he should go to find a nice place. “I remember asking a friend, it was Sunday, and I had a car, ‘Where should I go?’ I didn’t really know many people yet, ‘Where’s a nice place to go?’” Ramstad indicated his friend answered, “Go out, take Highway 12 West, you’ll see the sign for Wayzata, go down Lake Street, there’s a cafe there called Hart’s Cafe–the predecessor to Sunset’s…”
Ramstad continued, “And so I did, drove out here. And I’ll never forget, coming from North Dakota, where our biggest lake is a… …dam, I’ll never forget the first time the beauty of the green leaves changing, Wayzata Bay, the Lake, the great community of shops and people out with their families. I said to myself, ‘Someday, I’m going to live here.’”
He wrapped up his speech by saying, “…I am so proud to be a part of this great community. …Thank you very, very much for this is very, very meaningful award. I will never forget this day.”

WAYZATA, Minn. — The Wayzata City Council is set to convene a Special Closed Session at 7 am on October 11, 2008, to deliberate on the options for the purchase or condemnation of the Superior Stop situated on the corner of Lake and Superior.
This crucial decision is a pivotal step in the ongoing redevelopment of the Wayzata Bay Center.
Council Members have expressed their desire for a “T” intersection at the specified location and aim to realign Superior with Lake as part of the broader redevelopment plan.
The outcome of this session will significantly impact the finalization of the Wayzata Bay Center project, marking a key development in the City of Wayzata ongoing urban revitalization efforts.
