In the years I have served on the Wayzata City Council and Planning Commission, I’ve gained an overwhelming sense of how very, very fortunate we are to be able to live here. Our city works because of all the people who care so deeply about our town, including our volunteer firefighters, city staff and citizens who serve on boards, commissions and task forces. Large numbers of concerned citizens regularly participate in the debates over our future. That doesn’t happen everywhere, but it happens in Wayzata.
One of those dedicated people who has given countless hours of exceptional service is Mayor Andrew Humphrey. As you know, he recently announced that increased work and family commitments led him to decide not to run for another term. With his encouragement, I decided to enter the race to succeed him as Mayor.
With my four years of City Council and six years of Planning Commission experience, I believe I have a solid grasp of the issues facing Wayzata and what needs to be done to resolve those challenges. As Chair of the 10-year Wayzata Comprehensive Planning effort this year, I was able to help develop solutions and approaches to many of them.
Now I am asking for the support of all our engaged citizens in the November election. With your vote and help, I look forward to continuing our dedicated work to maintain and enhance our wonderful lakeside community. Thank you for the opportunity to serve.
In the City of Wayzata, Ken Willcox is running unopposed in the mayoral race. In a recent interview, Willcox shared insights into his life and candidacy, shedding light on his motivations for seeking the mayoral position.
Expressing initial uncertainty about running for office again, Willcox explained, “I wasn’t sure I even wanted to run again for my council seat. I was surprised when Andrew [Humphry] decided to retire, and he encouraged me to file [as a candidate for Mayor].”
With prior experience serving a 4-year term on the Wayzata City Council and an additional 6 years on the Planning Commission board, Willcox brings over a decade of dedicated service to the City of Wayzata. He also highlighted his previous experience in public service in the City of Minnetonka.
When asked about the three biggest issues facing Wayzata, Willcox identified the following:
Development pressure across the entire city
Finding a new location for the Muni following its displacement
Addressing the Lake Street and Superior intersection, with a focus on creating a T intersection for the gas station
The future of Sunset’s parking lot, city-owned property that may undergo development into a boardwalk or park.
Beyond his civic engagement, Willcox is the co-owner of Delta-Waseca, a truck equipment manufacturing company specializing in van bodies for commercial trucks, including dry freight, refrigerated, curtain side, and more.
With a military background as a retired captain in the US Navy and service as a Vietnam veteran, Willcox brings a wealth of experience to his candidacy. He earned his undergraduate degree from Williams College in Williamstown, MA, and holds an MBA from the University of Minnesota.
Ken and his wife Winnie have been Wayzata residents for several years, having moved from Minnetonka after finding a home that met their criteria.
