WAZYATA – At 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday July 29th, 2025, the Wayzata Police Department hosted its first-ever Sandcastles and Squads event at Wayzata Beach, offering a sunny afternoon of fun designed to strengthen relationships between local law enforcement and young residents.

Nineteen children participated in a friendly sandcastle-building competition, crafting imaginative creations along the shoreline of Lake Minnetonka. More than 60 buckets and pails were distributed, along with water bottles and Icees, as part of the department’s outreach efforts.

The event was created as a community engagement initiative aimed at fostering connection and approach-ability between the Wayzata Police Department and area youth. Officers were present throughout the event, helping distribute supplies and interacting with families in an informal, relaxed setting.

Sandcastles and Squads marked a unique opportunity for the police department to build goodwill with the next generation of residents through shared summer traditions. The event wrapped up with smiles, sandy hands, and hopes for future gatherings like it.
