Superintendent Issues Update Following Graduation Night Shooting at Mariucci Arena

WAYZATA — Wayzata Public Schools Superintendent Chace B. Anderson released a letter Sunday afternoon addressing a shooting incident that occurred shortly after the Wayzata High School graduation ceremony at 3M Arena at Mariucci on Saturday, June 1.

The letter, shared with families and staff, confirmed that both individuals injured in the shooting have been released from the hospital. One of the victims is a parent of a Wayzata graduate, according to Anderson. The identity of the second individual has not been publicly disclosed.

Authorities have not confirmed any connection between the suspect or the second victim and the Wayzata High School graduation event. The University of Minnesota Police Department is leading the ongoing investigation.

“Understandably, a number of rumors have already begun to circulate,” Anderson wrote. “I want to strongly encourage our community to avoid speculation or the spread of unverified information, as this remains an active investigation.”

Anderson emphasized that safety protocols were in place at the venue, including metal detectors at all entrances and the presence of school resource officers and University of Minnesota security personnel. He said the district will continue reviewing and strengthening its security measures for future events.

Support services will be available this week at Wayzata High School for students and staff impacted by the incident.

Despite the somber turn of events, Anderson urged the community to continue celebrating the accomplishments of the 934 graduates.

“Through all of this, let’s not lose sight of celebrating this incredible milestone,” he wrote. “Together, we will continue to support each other and emerge stronger as a community.”
