It’s official: Ice Out has been declared on Lake Minnetonka!

Earlier today, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Freshwater Society, announced that the lake is now free of ice—marking the unofficial kickoff to the 2025 boating season. The declaration is a long-standing tradition eagerly awaited by locals and lake lovers alike.

As boats begin to hit the water, safety remains top of mind. The Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone to wear life jackets and stay alert. Although the ice is gone, water temperatures remain dangerously cold, and hypothermia can set in quickly.

“We want everyone to enjoy the lake safely,” officials said. “Please take proper precautions and respect the early season conditions.”

Whether you’re launching a fishing boat, hopping on a paddleboard, or just cruising into Wayzata Bay, here’s to a safe and spectacular season on Lake Minnetonka!
