Wayzata City Council Member Alex Plechash has been named the new chair of the Minnesota Republican Party, bringing an impressive record of service and leadership to the role. Plechash ousted David Hann in a closely watched leadership contest, signaling a fresh direction for the party. While Plechash assumes the chairmanship, Donna Bergstrom will continue serving as the deputy chair, providing continuity as the GOP prepares for the next election cycle.

In his first statement after the announcement, Plechash emphasized his focus on party unity and discipline. “I am enforcing a media blackout until the end of this month to be sure that our message is totally aligned,” he said, highlighting his strategic approach to leadership.

A Life of Service and Leadership

Plechash’s journey to state party leadership builds on decades of distinguished service. A first-generation American, he grew up in suburban Chicago and graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval Academy with a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering. He was the top-ranked Marine Officer and Aerospace Engineer in his class, turning down offers from Princeton and MIT to pursue a Guggenheim Fellowship as a Burke Scholar. He later earned an MBA from the University of Chicago.

During his military career, Plechash graduated at the top of his class at the Marine Corps Basic School in Quantico, became Jet Student Naval Aviator of the Year, and transitioned to flying F-4 Phantom IIs. He served with distinction, including during Operation Desert Storm, retiring as a Lt. Colonel.

After leaving the military, Plechash held executive roles at Exxon and Oracle before moving into finance and investment banking. His civic contributions include serving as President and Chairman of Tee it Up for the Troops, Inc., a nonprofit supporting veterans, and as a volunteer firefighter for 16 years.

Political Experience and Vision

Plechash’s involvement in Minnesota politics dates back to 2004, when he began serving in various roles from Precinct Chairman to Congressional District Vice-Chair. He founded the Minnesota Organization of Republican Veterans (MORVets) and represented the state at the Republican National Conventions in 2008 and 2016. Now in his third term on the Wayzata City Council, Plechash is known for his straightforward style and results-driven leadership.
