Wayzata Pickleball Courts Draw Enthusiastic Crowds
Wayzata’s newly opened pickleball courts were buzzing with activity this morning, as more than 20 players gathered to make use of all four courts. Despite being a Monday morning, the parking lot was overflowing, underscoring the sport’s growing popularity in the community. Players of all ages and skill levels were seen enjoying themselves, laughing and engaging in friendly competition.
Pickleball, a hybrid of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, has experienced a meteoric rise in popularity across the U.S. in recent years. Combining ease of play with a fast-paced, competitive edge, the sport has drawn participants from all demographics. Originally developed in the 1960s, it has exploded into the mainstream over the past decade, becoming one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, pickleball has seen millions of new players, with its simple rules and smaller court size making it accessible to a broad range of participants.
Since the courts’ grand opening on July 31, 2024, Wayzata has embraced the pickleball trend, offering locals a welcoming space for fitness and socializing. The courts have quickly become a community hub, and the city plans to continue hosting events and tournaments as interest grows. “We heard a strong desire for [pickleball],” states Chair of the Wayzata Parks and Trails Board, Tory Schalkle. The Board gathered community feedback and consulted with stakeholders and peers over several years, recently converting one of the three tennis courts at the Bell Courts in Klapprich Park.
As pickleball captures the hearts of Wayzata’s residents, the courts are expected to remain a popular destination for those seeking both recreation and connection.
