Your Wayzata Trojans hit the road Friday night, hoping to spoil Prior Lake’s homecoming celebration, but the Lakers’ high-powered connection of quarterback Myles Greenwood and wide receiver Colten Gunderson proved to be too much. The dynamic duo combined for three touchdown pass completions, leading Prior Lake to a 21-7 victory.
The game’s turning point came midway through the first quarter. The Trojans’ defense, looking sharp early, unraveled after two dead-ball penalties on the same play. A pair of unsportsmanlike conduct flags against Wayzata handed Prior Lake 30 yards in free offense. On the very next play, Greenwood dropped back and found Gunderson on a 14-yard strike for their first touchdown connection of the night.
Wayzata’s defense kept them in the game for most of the first half, but the offense struggled to find a rhythm against a stifling Lakers defense. It wasn’t until the third quarter that the Trojans finally got on the board. Trailing 14-0, they pieced together a methodical drive, capped by a short touchdown run by Kyle Boutwell, making it a 14-7 contest and bringing life back to the Wayzata sideline.
But that momentum was short-lived. Prior Lake immediately responded, driving quickly downfield before Greenwood and Gunderson linked up again, this time for a back-breaking touchdown that stretched the lead to 21-7. Gunderson’s size and athleticism were a mismatch all night for Wayzata’s corners, and Greenwood took full advantage.
On the other side of the ball, Prior Lake’s defense never let the Trojans’ offense get comfortable. Whether through the air or on the ground, Wayzata couldn’t find a groove. The Lakers bottled up the run game and forced the Trojans into difficult third-down situations all night.
For Wayzata, it was a missed opportunity to make their mark on the Lake Conference standings, especially following Minnetonka’s overtime loss to Eden Prairie. The Trojans had pulled off a come-from-behind win at Eden Prairie last week, but they couldn’t capitalize on that momentum tonight in Prior Lake. Edina also lost to Shakopee last night as well.
