Downtown Wayzata just got a whole lot sweeter with the opening of The Thirsty Whale Bakery, owned by Alise and Luke McGregor. Taking over the space once home to Penny’s Coffee, this vibrant new bakery has quickly become a destination for anyone craving creative, over-the-top baked goods. From doughnuts to cookies, cupcakes to extreme custom cakes, The Thirsty Whale is serving up indulgent treats with a playful twist.

For those familiar with the McGregors, this isn’t their first bakery rodeo—they also own YoYo Donuts in Minnetonka. But with Wuollet Bakery’s departure, locals are thrilled to see another stand-alone bakery popping up in Wayzata, bringing a fresh dose of color (and sugar!) to the restaurant scene. “We’ve always loved downtown Wayzata,” Alise McGregor shared, adding that they’ve lived in the greater Plymouth/Wayzata area for over 12 years and jumped at the opportunity to set up shop here.

The bakery is a feast for the eyes before you even take a bite. Picture this: a dazzling display of fresh doughnuts in vibrant colors, a side wall lined with packaged cookies perfect for gifting (or a little self-indulgence), and a tempting case brimming with layer cakes, cupcakes, and bars. But the real showstopper? Their extreme custom cakes. Whether it’s a birthday, wedding, or just because, the McGregors’ motto is simple: “If you can dream it, we can build it.” These cakes are designed to wow, with flavors and designs that push the boundaries of creativity.

And while The Thirsty Whale may be about big flavors, the space itself feels warm and welcoming—just the kind of place where neighbors pop in for a coffee and chat over a sweet treat, or families pick up something special for a weekend celebration.

If you’re in the mood for something sweet or have a cake idea you’ve been dying to bring to life, The Thirsty Whale Bakery is now open and ready to serve. Stay tuned for more custom creations from this talented team. And don’t forget—you can reach them at (952) 209-2086 for any custom cake inquiries or to place an order.

Wayzata’s bakery scene just got a whole lot more exciting as the Thirsty Whale Bakery is open and ready to serve.
