The Wayzata Trojans opened with a strong defensive stand but couldn’t hold off the Shakopee Sabres, falling 17-7 in a physical matchup Friday night.

Wayzata’s defense set the tone early, stopping Shakopee on their opening drive. However, the Trojans’ offense stalled on their first possession, and a mishandled snap handed Shakopee prime field position at the Wayzata 22-yard line. Shakopee’s Emmanuel Taye capitalized with a 9-yard touchdown run, though the extra point attempt was unsuccessful, leaving the score 6-0.
Late in the second quarter, Taye struck again, rushing for a 16-yard touchdown with just 1:20 remaining. He also powered through for a two-point conversion, giving the Sabres a 14-0 lead at halftime.
Wayzata responded in the third quarter when Caden Wong broke through for a 6-yard rushing touchdown, closing the gap to 14-7. However, Shakopee’s Nicholas Olson added a late field goal with 3:38 left in the fourth, padding the Sabres’ lead and sealing the Trojans’ fate.

Wayzata Football will be home again next Friday for their Homecoming game against the Edina Hornets. Edina enters the contest with a 2-1 record, including a significant win over Eden Prairie, but they are coming off a tough loss to Minnetonka after surrendering a 28-7 third-quarter lead.
