Wayzata High School to Honor Inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame Class

Wayzata High School will induct its inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame class on Friday, Sept. 20, 2024, honoring athletes, coaches, and supporters who have contributed to the school’s storied athletic legacy.

The Hall of Fame ceremony will begin with a Q&A session from 2 to 3 p.m. in WHS Auditorium #2, followed by the induction ceremony from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The inductees will also be recognized during halftime of the homecoming football game, around 7:30 p.m., with a social gathering to follow at Rock Elm Tavern in Plymouth from 9 to 11 p.m.

The creation of the Wayzata Athletic Hall of Fame was driven by the dedication of Meghan Potter, Wayzata’s Director of Athletics, who credits Aaron Berndt for originally proposing the idea.

“The idea for the Wayzata High School Athletic Hall of Fame was brought to me by Aaron Berndt when I first started at WHS. Being new to the district, I didn’t realize we didn’t have something like this already in place,” said Potter.

“It took me a few years to get the idea organized into something tangible, but having been a part of HOF ceremonies in my previous AD position, it was something I was eager to start here.”

The inaugural class features a distinguished group of individuals who have represented Wayzata with excellence:

  • Jamie (Sanger) Cupit – Athlete
  • James Laurinaitis – Athlete
  • Becky (Gibbs) Lavelle – Athlete
  • Ken Leuer – Athlete
  • Mike Siskin – Athlete
  • Jordan (Helgren) Jurek – Athlete
  • Dick Beardsley – Trojan Award
  • Laura Halldorson – Trojan Award
  • Leslie Swiggum – Coach
  • Ward Schuster – Coach
  • Marion Barber III – Athlete
  • Gordy Engel – W-Club

The Hall of Fame’s mission is to recognize the achievements of these individuals while instilling pride in the Wayzata Trojans athletic community. The tradition will celebrate over 100 years of sports at Wayzata High School.
