James J. Hill Days Celebrates 50 Years with a Jam-Packed Festival

This September, Wayzata will once again transform into a lively hub of festivities as James J. Hill Days celebrates its 50th anniversary from September 6-8.

Known as Lake Minnetonka’s largest three-day festival, the event is expected to draw over 80,000 visitors who will experience a vibrant weekend filled with live music, carnival rides, food trucks, a craft beer festival, historical tours, and much more.

The milestone event is a tribute to the enduring legacy of railroad magnate James J. Hill, whose influence helped shape Wayzata into the charming lakeside community it is today.

A Festival to Remember

This year’s celebration promises to be the biggest yet, with an array of free concerts, family activities, and unique attractions designed to entertain all ages.

Festivities begin Friday evening at 6 p.m. with live music from the energetic High & Mighty, setting the tone for a weekend of performances by notable artists, including The Lamont Cranston Band, Kat Perkins, Powertap, and many others.

On Sunday, visitors can close out their weekend with performances by the Taylor Robert Band and the Sam Graber Band.

But it’s not just the music that will draw crowds.

One of the festival’s signature events, the Rails & Ales Craft Beer Festival, will take place on Friday from 5-9 p.m. Guests can enjoy unlimited samples from over 20 breweries, while enjoying live music by Hall & Oates cover band, Private Oates.

Family Fun and Classic Carnival Charm

For families, James J. Hill Days offers a variety of activities to keep everyone entertained throughout the weekend.

The ever-popular Lake Minnetonka Carnival will feature thrilling rides, including a Ferris wheel, as well as classic carnival games and treats.

The carnival runs Friday from 5-10 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m.-10 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Friday night’s Movie on the Lawn will feature the family-favorite film Stuart Little starting at 7:30 p.m. on the Great Lawn.

Sponsored by Wayzata Sailing, the event provides a perfect opportunity for families to gather, relax, and enjoy the final days of summer.

On Saturday and Sunday, the festival welcomes furry friends to the James J. Hill Days Dog Park, featuring activities such as the Dachshund Races on Saturday at noon and the Doggy Olympics on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Pet lovers can also enjoy pet caricature art and other fun-filled dog-centric activities.

Community Favorites: Fireworks, Airshow, and Parade

The excitement continues into Saturday evening with the highly anticipated Wayzata Bay Fireworks Show at 8:45 p.m.

This spectacular display over the lake will light up the skies, creating a magical atmosphere for festival-goers.

Sunday’s grand finale begins at 2:45 p.m. with the breathtaking T-6 Thunder Airshow, featuring vintage World War II planes soaring through the sky above Wayzata Bay.

The weekend culminates with the James J. Hill Days Parade at 3 p.m. on Sunday, a showcase of community pride and spirit that features floats, marching bands, and local organizations.

The parade has become a cherished tradition, celebrating Wayzata’s unique character and the people who make it special.

Shopping, Food, and Unique Experiences

For those looking to shop and explore, the festival’s Street Market will feature 200 unique vendors offering everything from handmade crafts to local delicacies.

The Street Market is open Friday from 5-9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Visitors can take a leisurely stroll down Lake Street, discovering an array of treasures while supporting local businesses and restaurants.

Additionally, history enthusiasts can join the Guided Historical Walking Tour led by the Lake Minnetonka Historical Society, which will take place on both Saturday and Sunday.

This tour offers a glimpse into Wayzata’s storied past, celebrating its transformation from a railroad town to the bustling lakeside community it is today.

Logrolling with North Star Logrolling experts will also be available throughout the weekend, giving participants a chance to try their hand at this exciting and challenging sport.

James J. Hill, often referred to as the “Empire Builder,” was the owner of the Great Northern Railroad Company and built Wayzata’s iconic train depot in 1906.
