The Wayzata Police Department is preparing to launch a Public Safety Drone program, with support from the Wayzata Crime Prevention Coalition, which is actively raising funds to help cover the costs.
The initiative aims to enhance the department’s ability to respond to critical incidents, particularly those requiring extensive area searches, such as locating missing vulnerable persons or tracking fleeing suspects.

The new drone program, which will cost approximately $25,800 to start, includes the purchase of a DJI Matrice 30T for field operations, an Avata Fly 2 for indoor use, and an additional DJI drone for officer training.
The ongoing annual upkeep of the program is estimated at $5,000.
Wayzata Police Chief Marc Schultz stated in an email that a group of residents in the Widsten townhomes in Wayzata first came up with the idea, “They have expressed some interest in donating to the Wayzata Crime Prevention Coalition to help fund the implementation of a WPD drone program in Wayzata.”
Drones have become a valuable tool for law enforcement, offering distinct advantages in speed, coverage, and perspective.
Equipped with dual zoom and thermal cameras, the drones can operate effectively in challenging conditions, such as nighttime searches or dense terrain.
These advanced capabilities significantly improve officers’ ability to locate individuals in scenarios where traditional methods may fall short.
However, the use of drones by law enforcement also comes with its challenges.
Privacy concerns are a major consideration, as drones can capture images and data over large areas, potentially infringing on citizens’ privacy rights.
Additionally, there are concerns about the misuse of drones, particularly in surveilling individuals without proper cause or oversight.
Despite these potential downsides, the Wayzata Police Department, after careful evaluation, has determined that the benefits of employing drones—especially in critical situations where time and efficiency are of the essence—outweigh the risks.
The department has selected DJI products, which have faced cybersecurity concerns in the past, but were found to be the best fit for their operational needs after consultations with other agencies and drone operators.
The Wayzata Crime Prevention Coalition’s fundraising efforts will play a key role in bringing this advanced technology to the local police force, enhancing their capabilities in protecting the community and ensuring public safety.
