Wayzata Girls Hockey Shows Promise Amidst Tough Competition
As we hit the midway point of the girls’ hockey season, Wayzata’s team has faced formidable opponents, showcasing both challenges and strengths within the team.
The Trojans played the perennially tough Edina Hornets in an early December matchup lived up to its reputation, with Wayzata Head Coach Bruce Podiak acknowledging the strength of Edina’s youth program, “Edina was difficult game, as always. They have a great youth program with large numbers and they will always be good.”
Despite the hard-fought game, the team remains focused on daily improvement, with eyes set on making a strong run in the upcoming sections. An earlier nail-biter against BSM (5-4) took an interesting turn when BSM went on to defeat Edina 5-2, underscoring the competitiveness of Wayzata’s schedule and strength of the Trojans team.
In a standout performance against Buffalo, Wayzata’s offensive prowess shone through with over 50 shots on goal, resulting in a 4-0 victory. Credit for the victory also goes to Wayzata’s goalies, Ella Podiak and Malin Erickson whose stellar performances stopping 50 shots secured the shutout, emphasizing the team’s defensive strength.
Individual player highlights include Shyla Sanders, a versatile player excelling in power play, penalty kill, and 6 on 5 situations. “Sanders’ grit, net-reaching ability, and sharp shooting position her as a key contributor. “Shyla Sanders is a player we can use in all situations. She’s gritty and gets to the net yet also has a great shot and has scored from higher in the slot.” stated Podiak.
Davy Mokelke, recognized as one of the fastest skaters statewide, is settling into her role, showcasing strength and conditioning that set her apart. She has 5 goals and 3 assists so far this season.
Defensive stalwart Jane Leach and seasoned captain Lola Candall contribute consistently, with Candall’s intangibles proving vital to the team’s success.
In goal, both Podiak and Erickson have been solid performers, sharing responsibilities throughout the season. Podiak, a senior captain, has seen increased playing time, while Erickson’s resilience against tough opponents positions her for future growth. Their support for each other and the JV goalies strengthens Wayzata’s goaltending lineup. Coach Podiak characterized his goalies, “It’s a great group we have in nets in the program. We are very fortunate for that.”
