WAYZATA BOY’S TENNIS: Trojans Move Into Semifinals

The Wayzata boy’s tennis team moved into Wednesday’s semifinals at the Class AA state tennis tournament with a 7-0 victory over Duluth East on Tuesday.

The Trojans’ four singles players swept through their matches without losing a set. Gary Notkin won his No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-3. Max Reisman won at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0. Duncan Sallstrom cruised through his match at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-0. Scott Vezzosi rounded out the dominance in the singles matches at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-3 victory.

The doubles matches were more competitive as Duluth East actually took two sets from the Trojans. Wayzata’s Ryan Weber and Ty Simcoe pulled out a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles. Diuliano Kornberg and Deepak Janardan rallied for a 0-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. Michael Ries and Jason Lee won in straight sets at No. 3 doubles 7-5, 6-1.

The Trojans will play two matches on Wednesday to finish out the team tournament. The Trojans are slated to face Rochester Mayo at 10 a.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota in one semifinal. Perennial powers Edina and Mounds View will meet in the other semifinal.

The third place match is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, while the championship match will take place at 4 p.m.
