The boy’s tennis doubles tandem of senior Ty Simcoe and junior Gary Notkin earned a spot at this year’s state tournament by winning the section 2AA doubles tournament on Tuesday, May 26.
Simcoe and Notkin won three straight three-set matches on their way to winning the tournament as the No. 2 seed.
Simecoe and Notkin first dispatched of Alexander Tollefson and Bradley Malmsten of Eden Prairie in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-2. After that, things got a little more difficult.
The pair needed three sets in the quarterfinals to defeat Wilmar’s Jim Neis and Mitchell Fader, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5.
In the semifinals, Simcoe and Notkin got past Eden Prairie’s Michael Crevier and Yiding Hou, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Simcoe and Notkin then punched their ticket to the state tournament with a dramatic 7-6, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Minnetonka’s Thiago Morsch and Luke Bastiansen in the championship match.
The Wayzata team will take part in the Class AA state tournament on June 2 and 3 at the Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota. Simcoe and Notkin will represent the Trojans in the individual state tournament on June 4 and 5.
