It’s been a tough last month and a half for the Wayzata girls hockey team. The Trojans limp into this weekend’s section playoffs having not won a game since late December.
The Trojans were seeded seventh in section 6AA where they will face second seeded Maple Grove at 6:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14 at Parade Ice Arena in Minneapolis. The top seed in the section is the Hopkins Royals.
The Trojans were 6-7-1 after a 3-0 victory over Moorhead on Dec. 31, but they have lost 11 straight games since then to finish the regular season at 6-18-1.
Maple Grove will enter the playoffs on a two-game losing streak, but their overall record is much more impressive at 18-7. The Crimson have not faired that well against Classic Lake Conference teams this year however. They beat Robbinsdale Armstrong, but lost to both Hopkins and Minnetonka early in the season.
The Crimson are led by sophomore forward Casey Hirsch who has 25 goals 17 assists this season. The Crimson’s goaltender is freshman Taylor McKenney who has a 14-6 record as a starter this year. McKenney has made 443 saves while allowing 42 goals.
The Trojans are led by senior forward Alison Umland who has 11 goals and 14 assists on the season. Junior forward Jenny Saxon has seven goals and a team-high 18 assists.
