The Wayzata High School Concert Choir and Chamber Orchestra will present a combined performance at the Minnesota Music Educators Association Midwinter Conference February 13 at 9 a.m. in the Minneapolis Convention Center.
The groups were selected through a competitive audition process and will be performing for an audience of music educators. The collaborative nature of the WHS repertoire is of particular note as more than half of the program consists of a Schubert Mass and a recent commission premiered by students in December, pieces which combine the orchestra and choir. Shared concerts are common in schools, but collaborative concerts are quite rare, according to WHS Orchestra Director Mark Gitch and Concert Choir Director Rebecca Wyffels. Gitch said WHS is the first school in several decades to present such a concert at the conference and the performance is the “equivalent of bringing the team to the state finals.” The groups will also perform several pieces independently as well.
