WAYZATA FOOTBALL 2008: Trojans defeat Rosemount Irish 34-10 in 5A State Semifinals to advance to Prep Bowl

The Trojans soundly beat the Rosemount Irish with their outstanding running game and a stout defensive effort. With spectacular performances by the Wayzata offensive line and running backs Garrett Englehardt and Kris Kroeten, the Trojans defeated the Irish 34-10 to advance to the Class 5A Prep Bowl and will play the Blaine Bengals in two weeks, the day after Thanksgiving. 1ST QUARTER

John Ries and the Trojans started from their 17 yard line. Ries tried to get the ball to Fritz Rock in the flat to no avail. A handoff of second down to Garrett Englehardt gained 2 yards to make it 3rd and 8 from thier own 19 yard line. Ries dropped back and threw it to Rock who gained 7 yards to bring up 4th down. Ryan Macgregor punted the ball away to the Irish.

Rosemount started at their own 41 yard line. Chase Vogler started at quarteback, but Wayzata lined up in the nuetral zone to give the Irish a free 5 yards. Vogler tried to get another snap and an offsides penalty against the Trojans gave the Irish a free first down. Andy Malicki gained 6 yards to his left. Rosemount picked up a false start, and the Wayzata gave it right back with another offside to give back the five yards. After all of that, it was 2nd and 4 on the Rosemount 43 yard line. Garrett Glaus was met by AJ Troup after a gain of 1. Vogler was stopped for a small gain to make it 4th and short. Rosemount picked up a first down on strong running by Malicki. On 1st and 10 from the Wayzata 39 yard line, Vogler threw into double coverage and the ball fell incomplete with good coverage. Vogler threw a screen pass to Glaus who gained a bunch and pushed the ball to the Wayzata 11 yard line for a 1st down. A carry by Malicki brought the ball to the 5 yard line. Vogler ran the option to his left and was stopped by Chris Meyers for no gain to bring up 4th down. Andrew

Wayzata started at their 19 yard line. Ries and Company tried an out to Fritz Rock who picked up an easy 4 yards to make it 2nd and 6 from the 25. Englehardt gained a couple to his left to make it 3rd and 3. Another Ries handoff to Englehardt ran through a big hole to pick up a first down. From the 33 yard line, Ries rolled to his right and passed it to Tarpley who picked up 17 yards to advance the ball to the 50 yard line for another 1st down. Englehardt gained 5 to his right to make it 2nd and 5. Garrett followed some great blocks to his right to pick up another 1st down on the Irish 44. A quick slant pass to Adan Hassan gained 5 yards to make it 2nd and 5. Ries tried a deep pass to Nolan Odland who ran into the end zone who was flanked with double coverage to bring up 3rd down. Englehardt zipped straight up the middle for another Trojan first down at the Irish 26 yard line. Ries handed off to Garrett for a short gain. Englehardt gained 7 up the middle to make it 3rd and 4. Ries threw to Aaron Roth to pick up some nice yardage.

2ND QUARTER

On a 1st and 13, Kris Kroeten followed the Hogs blocking to break off a 13 yard touchdown run. David Stranghoener added the extra point to make it 7-3 in favor of the Trojans with 11:55 remaining in the 2nd Quarter.

The Irish started at their 30 yardline with Vogler pitching back to Tyler Sandoz to gain 3 yards. Another handoff to Malicki to pick up a couple. A pass into the flat was well defended by Grant Olson and Daryl Brown to bring up 4th down. The Irish punted it away.

Wayzata started with better field position at their 31 yard line. A Ries handoff to Englehardt gained a couple. A screen pass to Fritz Rock picked up a bunch of yards, and a first down at the 42 yard line. Some tough running by Kroeten gained 7 yards and brought the ball just shy of the 50 yard line. A quick slant to Cecil Doe fell incomplete to bring up 3rd down. Englehardt tried his right side and was turned away from the 1st down to make it 4th and 2. Ryan Macgregor punted the ball away.

Rosemount took over at their 23 yard line. Vogler handed off to Malicki who gained 4 yards to make it 2nd and 6. Zachary Vraa caught a Vogler pass for a first down, and was tacked by Daryl Brown. Vogler was stopped after a gain of 1 by the d-line. Vogler tried to get it to Vraa and was well defended by Brown. A blitzing Trojan defense forced Vogler to throw the ball away to bring up 4th down. Hawley punted the ball to the Trojan 26 yard line.

Ries and Company started again with a pass to Matt Tarpley who gained 7 yards. A Ries handoff to Kroeten gained another 7 yards for a well deserved 1st down. A false start backed up the Trojans to thier own 35 yard line to make it 1st and 15. Ries hit Rock in stride on a bullet slant to gain 17 yards for a Trojan first down. Englehardt followed the blocks the Hogs gave him for a 8 yard gain to the Irish 40 yard line. Kroeten carried the ball to his right side for a 1 yard gain to bring up 3rd down. The Trojans came out in an I formation, and Ries gained a couple on the QB keeper to pick up the 1st down. Englehardt broke off another 5 yard run to make it 2nd and 5. Ries flipped it to Tarpley to gain 4 yards to make it 3rd and 1 with 2:00 left in the half. Kroeten followed the blocks of the Hogs to scamper up the middle for a 28 yard touchdown run. Stranghoener added the extra point to make it 14-3 with 1:45 left in the 2nd quarter.

The Irish started at their own 23 yard line with a 1st down and 1:45 left in the half. Grant Olson sacked Vogler for a loss of 3 to make it 2nd and 13. Vogler tried to throw the ball downfield, the ball was tipped, and hit Daryl Brown in the midsection, then fell to the ground. Vogler tried to get it to Vraa, but the ball hit the ground to bring out the Irish punting unit. Jack Pauley kicked it out of bounds at the Trojan 46 yard line.

Ries and Company came out with :49 left on the clock. Ries tried to get it to Cecil Doe but overthrew him. Ries flipped a screen pass to Odland for a gain of 7 to make it 3rd and 3. Ries threw it to his right, and Irish defender Jack Pawley who returned it to the Trojan 38 yard line.

Vogler threw it to an unidentified Rosemount reciever, but Hoffer and Brown provided outstanding coverage to keep the Irish from gaining yards with just seconds left. Vogler threw it as far as he could on a hail mary, to have it intercepted by AJ Tarpley to end the half.

HALFTIME STATS

Wayzata picked up 11 first downs in the first half. They ran 33 plays for 194 yards compared to Rosemounts’ 23 plays for 61 yards. Time of possesion favored Wayzata with 14:52 for the Trojans compared to 8:59 for the Irish. The Trojans were 5 for 8 in 3rd down conversions, and Rosemount went 1 for 6.

3RD QUARTER

The Irish started at their own 30 yard line. Vogler kept it for a yard to bring up 2nd and 9. Another Vogler keeper was stuffed by Carl West for no gain to make it 3rd and 9 at their own 31 yard line. Grant Olson sacked Vogler for 11 yards to make it 4th and 20. Pawley kicked it away and it bounced out of bounds to the Irish 48 yard line.

Ries and Company started the second half with great field position at the Rosemount 48 yard line. Ries handed off to Englehardt who carried a defender on his back to the 40 yard line for an 8 yard gain. Another Englehardt carry picked up a yard to make it 3rd and 1. A bruising Kroeten picked up a 1st down at the Irish 34 yard line. Ries threw it to Grant Olson who scampered up the sideline, ran over an Irish defender, and was pushed out of bounds at the 9 yard line. Kroeten picked up 4 yards to his left off of blocks by the Hogs to make it 2nd and goal at the Rosemount 5 yard line. Englehardt took a Ries handoff into the end zone off a massive block by Bennett Rustad. Stranghoener added the extra point to make it 21-3 in favor of the Trojans with 7:30 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Irish started at their own 37 yard line. Vogler threw it backwards, but the Irish held onto it. Vogler threw it to an Irish receiver who was met immediately by Daryl Brown. A Vogler pass was well defended by Paul Hoffer to bring up 4th down. Rosemount faked the punt, and threw it to Vraa to pick up the 1st down at the Wayzata 42 yard line. Milicki gained 1 yard up the middle. A Vogler option keeper gained another yard to make it 3rd and 8. Vogler threw a rocket to Vraa who was tackled immediately by Trojan defender Brown to make it 4th and 2. A Vogler pass to Vraa fell imcomplete to turn it over on downs.

Wayzata started at their own 34 yard line. Ries and Company came out passing to Cecil Doe, but it was well defended by Rosemount defender Glaus. Kroeten picked up 2 yards to make it 3rd and 8. A screen pass to Fritz Rock gained 7 yards, just shy of the 1st down marker to bring on the Trojan punt unit.

The Irish took over at their own 26 yard line. Ben Lucious replaced Vogler, and gained 1 yard. Lucious pitched it to Vraa who threw it down field, and Chris Meyers intercepted the ball, and pitched it to Jack Egan who advanced the ball to the 36 yard line.

Englehardt gained 9 yards on a carry to the left. Garrett also carried the ball for 3 yards to gain another Trojan 1st down.

4TH QUARTER

Ries and company started the 4th quarter with a Kroeten 7 yard rush to the Wayzata 45 yard line. Englehardt was stopped for no gain by Jay McPhillips. Kroeten gained a yard up the middle to bring up 4th down. Ryan MacGregor kicked it away to the Irish deepman Glaus.

Glaus was well covered and stopped at the Rosemount 15 yard line. Vogler handed off to Tyler Sandoz who was stopped after a 5 yard gain. Vogler threw it towards Glaus, but Robbie Heflin provided excellent coverage to make it 3rd and 5. A pass attempt by Vogel to Glaus was well defended by David Boegel to bring up 4th and 5. Pauly kicked it to the Trojan 36 yard line.

Ries and Company came out with a false start to make it 1st and 15 from their own 31 yard line. A Ries rollout pass to Tarpley picked up 9 yards to make it 2nd and 6. Kroeten broke off 30 yards to advance the ball to the Irish 35 yard line and a Trojan 1st down. Englehardt smashed his way up the middle for a 6 yard gain to make it 2nd and 4. Englehardt lost a yard on the next play to make it 3rd and 6 with 6:30 left in the game. A Ries screen pass to AJ Tarpley gained another 30 yards to make it 1st and goal from the 4 yard line of the Irish. Englehardt picked up 1 to his left. Englehardt followed Bennet Rustad into the end zone to score the touchdown. Stranghoener’s extra point attempt was blocked to make it 27-3 in favor of Wayzata with 5:40 left in the game.

The Irish started their next drive at their own 34 yard line. A Vogler pass attempt to Vraa was out of bounds. Vogler ran to his right to gain 7 yards to make it 3rd and 3. Vraa caught a Vogler pass for a 1st down, and was tackeld immediately by Chris Meyers. Broback gained 7 to his left. Vogler passed to an Irish reciever and David Boegel provided the coverage. Toby Okuyemi sacked Vogler who put the ball on the turf; Jack Egan scooped it up and returned it about 40 yards for a touchdown. Stranghoener added the extra point to make it 34-3 in favor of the Trojans with 3:32 left in the game.

The Irish started at their own 42 yard line. The Trojans put in their 2nd defensive unit. Vogler rolled to his right with Trojans in pursuit who forced him out of bounds for a gain of 3 yards. Vogler rolled to his left and threw it to Jordan Maeck for an Irish 1st down. Vogler heaved it to Vraa who came down with it on the Trojan 3 yard line. Maxwell Busher caught a Vogler pass in the end zone for their 1st touchdown of the evening. Brobeck’s extra point attempt was good to make it 34-10 in favor of Wayzata with 2:27 left in the game.

Kramer Berg under center for the Trojans handed off to Chris Lindsey who gained a couple yards. Another Lindsay carry gained another yard to make it 3rd and 7 on thier own 36 yard line. Aaron Roth carried the ball for a couple more yards. Ryan Macgregor punted the ball away.

The Irish’s Kevin Larson ran a play and was tackled by Max Baker for the last play of the game.
