The Wayzata Trojans Football team rolled over the St. Cloud Tech Tigers this evening in the Class 5A 2008 Minnesota State Football Tournament. The Trojans used big plays to score touchdowns and tenancious defense to keep the Tigers off the board.
1ST QUARTER
St Cloud started with the ball on their 30 yard line. Adam Johnson handed off to a Kelvin Robinson was stuffed by AJ Tarpley to lose a yard. A pass attempt by Johnson fell incomplete on 2nd down. A screen pass to Robinson gained no yards to make it 3rd and 11. The Tigers punter Alex Hanks kicked it away.
Wayzata started at their own 40 yard line. John Ries dropped back to pass on the 1st play from scimmedge for the Trojans, and threw it down the field to a streaking Cecil Doe who caught it for an easy touchdown. David Stranghoener added the extra point to make it 7-0 with 10:17 left in the 1st quarter.
St. Cloud Tech started at their own 26 yard line. Tiger QB Johnson through to Alan Fruth to gain 12 yards. Robinson took a pitch for a nice gain to make it 2nd and 2. Robinson dropped back to pass and threw into the hands of Trojan defender AJ Tarpley who brought it to the Tiger 38 yard line.
Ries and Company handed off to Chris Kroeten to gain 6 yards up the middle. Kevin Knight took another Ries handoff for a bunch of yards to bring it to the Tech 22 yard line as Wayzata threatened again. A Ries pass to Fritz Rock in the flat gained 5 yards to make it 2nd and 5 at the 17. Wayzata was charged with a false start and had to back up 5 yards to make it 2nd and 10. A handoff to Garrett Englehardt gained a couple. A Ries pass to Nolan Odland on the left side of the field gained 6 yards to make it 4th and 1 at the 13. A handoff to Chris Kroeten was stopped for a loss to turn the ball over on downs.

St Could Tech took over on their 17 yard line, and handed off to Robinson who tried the left side and picked up half a yard. Robinson took a pitch and found a hole and gained 11 yards to make it out to the 30 yard line and a Tech 1st down. Johnson dropped back and tried to pass to Fruth fell imcomplete off of Fruth’s hands. Robinson overthrew Tyson Euerle on a slant. Toby Okuyemi stuffed Robinson for a loss to make it 4th and long. The Tigers punter Alex Hanks had the ball partially blocked, and Wayzata took over on the Tech 36 yard line.
Garrett Englehardt took a handoff and scampered up the middle to gain 8 yards to make it 2nd and 2. Englehardt carried again to gain a Trojan first down at the Tech 18 yard line. A Ries attempt to Cecil on his right fell incomplete to make it 2nd and 10. Chris Kroeten took a Ries handoff to the Tech 12 to make it 3rd and 4 at the 12. Ries dropped back and tried to fire to Doe in the endzone and was almost intercepted. Wayzata went for it for the 2nd time on 4th down, and Ries tried to hit Fritz Rock on a slant who was met with bone jarring hit to turn it over on downs.
St Cloud Tech took over on their own 12 yard line, and Johnson handed off to Robinson, who was gang tackled by a host of Trojans for a loss of 4 yards. Another rush attempt by Tech to their right was met by the defensive line of the Trojans to make it 3rd and 14. A draw by the Tigers gained 4 yards to make it 4th and 10 deep in Tiger territory. Alex Hanks punted it 4 yards.
Wayzata took over on their 18 yard line. Englehardt carried it up the middle for 6 yards to make it 2nd and 4. Englehardt carried again and gained a couple to the 10 yard line. A handoff to Kroeten was stuffed for no gain to make it 4th down. David Stranghoener kicked a field goal to make it 10-0 with :15.7 seconds left in the 1st quarter.
The Tigers got started on their 24 yard line. A pitch from Johnson to Robinson gained 5 yards to the right side.
2ND QUARTER
A pass from Johnson to Adam Spengler was complete, with Chris Meyers making the tackle at the Tiger 40 yard line as Tech picked up a 1st down. A Johnson pass attempt up the sideline flew out of bounds to make it 2nd and 10. A Johnson pass to Fruth was complete for another 1st down. AJ Tarpley tackled Robinson for a loss of 2 yards to make it 2nd and 12. Johnson threw it to a wide open Fruth at the Wayzata 31 yard line. Robinson threw it backwards and fumbled it out of bounds to make it 2nd and 14. Johnson tried to connect with Fruth again who dropped it. Paul Hoffer defended a Johnson pass down the left side line to make it 4th down. Alex Hanks kicked the Tech punt into the end zone.
Wayzata took over on their own 20 yard line. Ries handed off to Garrett Englehardt who was stopped for no gain. A second handoff to Englehardt was stopped inintially, until he popped out behind the defensive line and scampered 80 yards for for a touchdown. Stranghoener added the extra point to make it 17-0 with 9:06 left in the 2nd quarter.
The Trojans tried an onside kick, and the football dribbled out to the 50 yard line until Straghoener fell on it. Ries and Company started by handing off to Chris Kroeten who scampered up the middle for a couple. A flag on the play for holding nullified the play and made it 1st and 22 on the Trojan 38. Kroeten smashed his way through behind the blocking of his offensive line to make it 2nd and 10. Kroeten tried the right side and was stopped for a loss of 1 yard to make it 3rd and 11. Englehardt carried the ball up the middle for 4 yards to bring up 4th down and Mac Cameron who booted it to the Tiger 19 yard line.
Tech started again by trying to pass to Fruth, but the pass was well defended by Jack Egan who knocked it away. A Robinson carry gained 5 yards to make it 2nd and 5. A Johnson pass attempt to Mark Kaczor fell incomplete. David Boegel almost picked off a Johnson pass as he collided with Tech receiver Kaczor. Hanks punted the ball to the Trojan 22 yard line.
A Ries pass atempt fell imcomplete. Englehardt carried for 7 yards to make it 3rd and 3. Fritz Rock dropped a Ries pass to make it 4th and 3. Mac Cameron punted the ball away to the Tech 48 yard line.
St Cloud tech came out trying to run as Robinson was stuffed for no gain. A Johnson pass was deflected by Robbie Heflin. Chris Meyers interfered with a Tiger receiver to make it 1st and 10 at the Wayzata 37 yard line. The hook and ladder from Fruth to Euerle brought the ball to the Trojan 22. A Robinson rush was stuffed for a 1 yard loss. Johnson threw towards the end zone and the Tech receiver was well covered by Paul Hoffer. A Tech motion penalty made it 3rd and 16. A Johnson heave into the end zone fell imcomplete as the whole Trojan secondary gave great coverage o make it 4th down. Toby Okuyemi sacked Johnson for 8 yards to help the Trojans take over on downs.
Wayzata took over on their 36 yard line, and Kroeten gained 5 yards up the middle. Englehardt took a pitch to his right to gain 3 yards as he dashed out of bounds to make it 3rd and 2. A pass from Ries to Chris Lindsey gained a Trojan 1st down at the Tech 45 yard line. Kroeten battled for 6 yards up the middle to make it 2nd and 4 with a little over a minute left in the 2nd quarter. A Ries handoff to Englehardt bounced onto the turf, and Alex Hanks of St Cloud came up with the ball.
The Tigers started with 1:11 at their own 38. Johnson handed off to Kaczor who gained 4 yards up the middle to make it 2nd and 6. A Johnson pass to the flat fell in and out of Wayzata defender Daryl Brown’s hands who would have walked into the end zone for an easy score. Kaczor carried to his left for another Tiger 1st down. Johnson tried to get it to Ryan Spengler, who was well defended by Chris Meyers to make it 3rd and 10. A Kaczor carry gained zero yards as he was met by Grant Olson at the line of scrimmedge to make it 4th down and 10 with :2.2 left in the 1st half. Tech spread 3 receivers to the right and threw it to Fruth on the opposite side; the football fell to the ground harmlessly as 3 Trojans provided coverage.
3RD QUARTER
The Trojans started the 2nd half at their own 33 yard line. Ries and Company started by throwing the ball to Fritz Rick who gained 14 yards. Ries threw it and Tiger defender Nicholas Slade tipped it up into the air as Kroeten caught it and scampered to the Tiger 5 yard line. An illegegal block in the back brought Wayzata back to the 31 yard line. A Ries pass to Cecil Doe headed towards the end zone was behind him. A screen pass to Englehardt gained 6 yards to make it 3rd and 9. A play action pass from Ries to a wide open Cecil Doe in the end zone was for 26 yards for an easy score. Stranghoener added the extra point to make it 24-0 with 10:19 left in the 3rd quarter.
Tech took over on their 33 yard line, as Johnson threw to Jordan Ramler for a gain of 8 yards. Another Johnson passed to a Tiger receiver picked up the first down. A Johnson pass under pressure was overthrown with Trojan Daryl Brown providing coverage. A rush by Kaczor was stopped by Grant Olson. Another pass attempt by Johnson was knocked down by Paul Hoffer to make it 4th and 8. Hanks punted the ball out of bounds.
Wayzata took over at their 28 yard line and Englehardt gained an easy 7 yards to his left. Another Englehardt carry gained 14 yards as Wayzata got another 1st down at mid field. Englehardt rushed up the middle for a couple of yards. Kroeten gained a couple more to make it 4th down. Cameron punted to the ball away to the Tiger 16 yard line.
St Cloud Tech started at their 16 yard line by handing off to Kaczor who was wrapped up immediately by Jack Egan for a loss of 2. Johnson threw to Jordan Ramler who was blanketed by Daryl Brown. A pass from Johnson to Tyson Euerle gained a Tiger 1st down. Johnson threw an out to Fruth who was tacked by Grant Olson. Chris Meyers defended another Johnson pass attempt to make it 3rd and 4 at the Tiger 34 yard line. A Johnson pass attempt to the right was well defended by Robbie Heflin and Chris Meyers to make it 4th and 4. Hanks faked a punt on a direct snap and picked up a Tiger 1st down. Johnson threw it to Fruth who was hit immediately by Robbie Heflin. Johnson tried to get it to Euerle over the middle without success to make it 3rd and 5. A screen pass to Kaczor was well defended by Grant Olson. Hanks punted the ball away, and Boegel fair caught it.
The Trojans started at their own 15 yard line, and Kroeten picked up a couple to his right. Another rush attempt by Kroeten was disrupted by the Tech defense. A screen pass from Ries to Englehardt was snuffed out by Tiger defender Gurdis to make it 4th and 14. Cameron punted the ball away and the Tigers took over on the Trojan 40 yard line.
Kevin Potas sacked Tiger QB Johnson for a loss of 10 yards. An errant pass by Johnson was intercepted by Chris Meyers who returned it 20 yards to the Wayzata 49 yard line. A holding penalty brought Wayzata back to their own 34 yard line on the same play. A false start backed them up 5 more yards to the 29 yard line. A rush attempt by Englehardt gained 3 yards. A Ries pass to Nolan Odland for some nice yardage made it 3rd and 4 with the football on the Wayzata 40 yard line.
4TH QUARTER
A 40 yard pass attempt from Ries to Doe fell incomplete to bring up 4th down and 4. Cameron punted the ball away for 42 yards, and it was downed at the Tech 18 yard line.
Tech came out in a spread formation, and handed off to Euerle who gained 6 yards and was stopped by Chris Meyers. A pitch to Robinson was stopped by Grant Olson for a loss of 5. Johnson threw a prayer to Kaczor who caught it for a 30 yard gain and was tackled by a Trojan defender. A pitch to Robinson was stopped by Daryl Brown for a small loss. Johnson fumbled the exchange, and AJ Tarpley fell on it to give the Trojans excellent field position.
A handoff to Englehardt went for 20 yards to the Tiger 21 yard line. Chris Kroeten dashed into the end zone straight up the middle for an easy touch down. Stranghoener added the extra point to make it 31-0 with 9:39 left in the 4th quarter.
St Cloud started with a 1st and 10 at their own 25 yard line. A Johnson pass attempt to Jordan Ramler was well defended by Ross Giangrossi. Euerle caught a Johnson pass and Robbie Heflin stopped him as Brown laid the wood to make it 2nd and 5. A slant pass to Fruth gained 8 yards and a Tech 1st down. Jack Egan sacked Johnson for a huge loss of 11 yards to make it 2nd and 21 on the Tiger 27 yard line. Another Johnson quick out gained a couple to Euerle and was stopped by Paul Hoffer. Johnson threw to Furth who dropped it to make it 4th and 16. Hanks punted the ball to the 45 yard line, and bounced off of Boegel as Tiger defender Slade fell on it to gain the ball back. Johnson tried to get it to Fruth, and a pass interference call against the Wayzata secondary made it 1st and 10 at the Trojan 26. An offside against the Trojans made it 1st and 5 at the 21. Johnson threw it over the middle to Fruth for a gain of 11 at the Trojan 10 yard line. Robinson scooted up the middle for a 5 yard gain. Robinson tried his right side and was stuffed by Egan and Heflin to make it 3rd and goal at the 10 yard line. Daryl Brown defended a Johnson pass and was interfered with by Fruth–to make 4th down and goal at the Wayzata 30 yard line. Kaczor caught the ball on the half yard line, a gain of 29.5 yards to turn over the football on downs.
Wayzata took over on their 1 yard line, and Kramer Berg tried a QB sneak for 1 yard. Berg laid a perfect pass in front of AJ Troup who caught it and tore up the sideline for a 98 yard touchdown score. Stranghoener added the extra point to make it 38-0 with 3:50 left in the game.
The Tigers took over on their 33 yard line. Kaczor gained 24 yards up the middle to get it to the 41 yard line of Wayzata. A Johnson pass was tipped and intercepted by Cody Lewis.
Berg and Company handed off to Chris Lindsey for a gain of 5 yards. Lindsey went up the middle again for a 1st down as time expired.
