The Wayzata Trojans hosted the Robbinsdale Cooper Hawks in the 2008 Section 5A Football Tournement. Cooper beat Maple Grove on Tuesday night to earn the right to travel to Wayzata.
Ryan Macgregor, pictured left, kicked an 83 yard punt to pin Cooper on the 1 inch yard line during the course of the game. Wayzata sputtered a little on offense this week, and seemed to show signs of being off a week with the bye. Watch for them to take on Champlin Park next Friday night in more AAAAA Sectional Action.
1st QUARTER
Trojan QB John Ries started under center and flipped it to Fritz Rock, but the play was called back for an illegal man downfield. Ries handed off to Garrett Englehardt for a 20 yard scamper into Hawk territory and a first down at the Cooper 42. A screen pass from Ries to Englehardt netted no gain to bring up 2nd and 10 for the Trojans. Ries handed off to Englehardt who dove to his left for a 5 yard gain. Wayzata QB John Ries handed off to Chris Kroeten who easily picked up the first down at the Hawk 32. A slant pattern by Rock and a quick pass from Ries netted 10 yards. Kroeten carried the ball from the Cooper 22 yard line for 5 yards to bring up 2nd and 5 from the 15 yard line. Another handoff to Kroeten picked up 3 yards. Englehardt ran to the left behind his big offensive line to pick-up the first down at the Hawk 6 yard line. A Ries pass to Rock gained a couple, but was nullified by an illegal man down field to make it first and 11 from the 11. An Englehardt carry netted no gain. A lofted ball from Ries to a end zone corner bound Matt Tarpley was caught out of bounds. A slant attempt by Ries to Tarpley fell incomplete to bring up 4th down. David Stranghoener kicked a field goal from the 11 yard line was blocked and returned by Cooper to the Hawk 40 yard line.

Cooper QB DJ Hebert started under center and hand off to Dwayne Crenshaw who was tacled after a gain of 1 yard by Kevin Potas. A pass attempt by Hebert to the flat was almost intercepted and taken to the house by Jack Egan to make it 4th and 7. Punter Michael Rose caught the snap low with his knee down to give the Trojans the ball on the Cooper 32 yard line.
A Ries handoff to Garrett Englehardt netted a couple of yards. A Ries attempt to Cecil Doe streaking towards the end zone fell incomplete to make it 3rd and 8. Ries tried to get the ball to Tarpley along the the left side line in front of the first down marker was overthrown. Punter Ryan Macgregor gave Wayzata a chance to down on it the 1 yard line, but it bounced off of an unidentified Trojan into the end zone.
Cooper’s next drive started at their own 20. An errant pass sailed out of bounds. The second play was a sweep to the right where Jack Egan would up with a fumbled ball in his hands running the other way. The ball squirted out before Egan was tackled and Grant Olson fell on the ball at the Cooper 11 yard line. Chris Kroeten ran to his left from the Cooper 11 and tore into the endzone for a touchdown. David Stranghoener added an extra point to make it 7-0 with 4:52 remaining in the 1st quarter.
The Cooper return man muffed the catch, and fell on it at the Hawk 20 yard line. Cooper runner Neko Kyles gained three before being tackled by Carl West. An overthrown pass by Hawk QB Hebert was intercepted by Daryl Brown at the Trojan 49 yard line.
Ries handed off to Kroeten who darted to his left for a 6 yard gain. A coverage sack of Ries by Cooper lost 8 yards to bring up 3rd down and 12. A slant pass from Ries to Doe gained 9 yards to bring the Trojan punting unit on again. Ryan Macgregor kicked the ball to the Hawk Elijah Swen who returned the ball to the Trojan 41 yard line, and a facemask added 5 more yards.
Cooper tried the sweep again and AJ Tarpley tackled the Hawk runner for a loss of 8. Hebert’s pass to the flat was covered well by Robbie Heflin to make it 3rd and 18. Tobi Okeyumi scored his first monstrous sack of the game on Hebert to make it 4th and 28. The Hawk punter sent it to David Boegel who was tackled immediately on the Wayzata 12 yard line.
Wayzata started this drive at their own 12 yard line, and Garrett Englehardt carried it for a couple of yards. Another Englehardt carry netted no gain.
2nd QUARTER
A Ries pass attempt to Fritz Rock fell incomplete to bring up 4th and 5 and the Trojan punting unit. Ryan MacGregor punted the ball 83 yards to the Cooper 1 inch line for what seems likely to be a Minnesota High School record.
Hebert tried the QB sneek for a couple of yards and was met by a host of Trojans. A Cooper pass from Hebert to Wesley Stewart was well defended by John Connelly. A lame duck of a pass from Hebert to a Hawk reciever gained 26 yards. A Hawk run by Hebert was fumbled, and John Connelly scooped up the ball and ran to the Cooper 27 yard line.
Wayzata went back to running the ball as Kroeten smashed his was through for 20 yards to make it first and goal from the Cooper 6 yard line. Kroeten gained 3 yards on his next rush attempt to make it 2nd and 3. Garrett Englehardt followed a host of Trojan blockers to score the Touchdown, and Stranghoener added the extra point to make it 14-0 with 8:40 left in the 2nd quarter. Cooper started another drive at the Hawk 24 yard line. Kevin Potas sacked Herbert to make it 2nd and 19 for the Hawks. An end around sniffed out by Jack Egan lost 2 yards. Hebert was sacked again by Okeyumi. Cooper punted it to Daryl Brown who called for a fair catch at the Cooper 27 yard line.
The Trojans took over as Ries handed off to Tarpley for a a short gain. Ries handed off to Englehardt who scampered for 26 yards to bring it to the Cooper 1 inch line with a Trojan first down. Englehardt again followed a host of Trojan blockers, this time to the right and fell into the end zone for touchdown. Stranghoener added the extra point to make it 21-0 with 5:55 left in the 2nd quarter. The Cooper Hawks started again at their own 18 yard line. The Hawks was stopped after a short gain by Neko Kyles was tackled by Kevin Potas. Bixler was tackled by Grant Olson to bring up 4th and 7 and the Hawk punting unit.
The Trojans started at the Cooper 47 yard line as the offense came back on the field. A Ries pass attempt was batted down at the line of scrimmedge. Ries handed off to Kroeten for a quick 3 yard pick up to bring up 3rd and 7 for Wayzata. Another Chris Kroeten dive for decent yardage was called back on a holding penalty to make it 3rd and 12. Ries was hit as he tried to throw it down the field and Cooper intercepted the ball on their 20 yard line–as good or better than a punt.
Hebert dropped back and was sacked for 6 yards by Kevin Potas to make it 2nd and 21. A host of Trojans tackeled Hebert on a keeper to make it 3rd and 18. Another Hebert keeper netted no gain and a 4th and 18 at the Cooper 14. The cooper punt team had their kick partially deflected as Wayzata took over at the Hawk 25 yard line with 1:29 left before halftime.
A well executed screen pass from Ries to Englehardt for a touchdown was called back for holding. A quick out from Ries to Fritz gained a bunch to make it 1st and 10 at the Cooper 14. Ries was sacked by a blitzing Hawk defense to make it 2nd and 25. Fritz Rock made a leaping catch to gain 24 yards to make it 3rd and inches at the Cooper 4 yard line. Garrett Englehardt carried the ball to his right to gain the inches necessary for a Trojan first down at the Cooper 3 yard line with 27 seconds left. A rollout by Ries and quick pass to Tarpley scored a 3 yard touchdown. Stranghoener added the extra point with 17.1 seconds left in the half to make it 28-0.
Cooper started at their 31 yard line with 12.9 seconds remaining in the half. Hebert took a knee to end the half with the score 28-0 at the half.
