Wayzata Football Head Coach Brad Anderson was kind enough to join me for our regular segment this evening in a short week for the Trojans. They beat Burnsville 70-0 last Friday night and take on the visiting Edina Hornets Wednesday night at Trojan Stadium, 7:00pm.
Dan Gustafson: Congratulations on the win over Burnsville last night Coach. Did you accomplish everything you wanted to accomplish there?
Brad Anderson: We wanted to go in and come away with a win. So that was number 1 and we did that. We played a lot of players, we got a lot of kids who normally wouldn’t get a chance to play in a varsity game, and that was good. From that perspective, I thought it was great. You are never totally happy with how you play, but overall I thought we played a pretty good game.
DG: How did you feel about setting your scoring record?
BA: That wasn’t high on my priority list ever to do. I don’t know if you ever really feel good about a game like that, on either side. I never want to see a team be on the other end of that, and it is not something that we set out to do. I guess it is a result of their play and our play that night. It does take something to score 70, I think the fact that the defense played so well had a lot to do with it.
DG: Your defense played extremely well. Chris Meyers had 2 interceptions returned for touchdowns…
BA: We had 2 interceptions returned for touchdowns, Chris had them both. We had a punt return for a touchdown, a blocked punt for a touchdown, and then a couple of other punt returns that set us up in good field position. All those parts came together.
DG: What do you know about Edina?
BA: They are a very well coached team. They run a spread offense. The have a quarterback, [Anders Lee] who runs it extremely well. He is a double threat in the fact that you have to play him as a passer and as a runner. Defensively, they have been very tough on us over the years. The run a defense that we don’t see throughout the regular season, other than when we play them. We play them with only a couple days practice, and it makes it even more difficult. They are a good club, and they were last years [Classic Lake] Conference Champs. We respect them very much.
DG: How do you anticipate you will handle Anders Lee?
BA: I think the big thing is we are going to make their team beat us. He is one part of the team, he’s obviously a very important part of their team, but defensively we really go out their and try to make them play not to their strength. Coach Lombardi does a good job of making people do things that maybe they don’t want to do. That’s our number 1 objective. Maybe make them play left handed.
