Wayzata Chamber of Commerce President Peggy Douglas spoke to the Wayzata Lions during their monthly meeting on May 17, 2011, held at the Wayzata Country Club.

Douglas detailed her involvement with the Wayzata community, dating back to 1972 when she moved to the area. She was the Executive Director from 1992 – 1999 and has been President of the Chamber since 2006.

Her recent contributions to the community include serving on the City of Wayzata’s Financial Task Force, participating in commercial property meetings, and helping to market Wayzata outside the community.

The Wayzata Lions and Redeemer Lutheran Church are offering an opportunity to put your time and skills to work on a new construction home for Thrivent Builds and Habitat for Humanity.

The project this year is in Ramsey, and scheduled for May 14th (Thursday) and 15th (Friday) from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

This is a great opportunity to meet your Wayzata Lions Club members if you have ever considered joining, and hang out with the Wayzata’s service organization, an all around great bunch of people. Additionally, all skill levels from contractor to site sweeper are encouraged to attend. If you have interest, contact Lion Dewey via email at dasenneseth [at] msn.com or call 763-473-6662.

Those planning on attending will meet at Redeemer Lutheran and car/truck pool to the site.

The 92nd Lions International Convention will be, held July 6-10, in Minneapolis / St Paul, Minnesota, USA. Minneapolis and St. Paul are commonly known as the “Twin Cities”, and are thriving Midwestern cities that boast strong support for the Lions, Lioness and Leos of the world.

Some volunteer positions are filling up. The Host Committee Booth and the Merchandise Booth positions are full. We can use help with the following positions:

1. Parade Marshall
2. Sergeant At Arms
3. Hotel Greeters
4. Airport Greeters and Drivers

Only Sergeant At Arms requires convention registration. The other jobs are not in the convention center.

Only one month left for the special convention pricing of $100. It goes up to $150 on May 1.

Lastly, District Governor School volunteers are needed for the week prior to the convention. Please look over the schedule and volunteer. No convention registration is required.

A message from your Wayzata Lions Club: May 4, 9:30 – 2:30, the National Federation of the Blind of Minnesota will host the second annual Possibilities Fair for Seniors Who Are Losing Eyesight. This fair will provide seniors with decreasing eyesight a hands-on opportunity to learn methods for improving their lives and interact with other seniors experiencing loss of eyesight. There is no doubt that many seniors you work with are losing some eyesight, as loss occurs more frequently among those who are older. Close to 14% of those 65 and older lose eyesight and that number grows to close to 22% when they reach 75. Seniors may not know about the training they need, such as adjustment to blindness, independent living skills, and Braille. The Possibilities Fair will offer older adults the opportunity to:

• Try demonstrations of talking devices
• Learn about travel techniques for getting around independently and safely
• Learn about techniques for cooking
• Learn about books on tape and newspapers over the telephone, talking computers and magnification devices
• Learn helpful hints about still enjoying life with decreased eyesight
• Visit interactive booths with an array of information, demonstrations and displays
