“Bode McConnell’s puck-bouncing, crossbar straddling goal sparked the Edina boys hockey team to a 3-1 win over Wayzata in the Section 6AA final. McConnell’s went on to score the next two goals, including an empty-netter in the third to help the Hornets beat the Trojans for a fourth straight time in the 6AA title game. Eli Molde’s goal put Wayzata on top in the first period. McConnell’s two goals in the second were just a minute and nine seconds apart from each other. Edina will advance to the Class AA state tournament. Wayzata finishes its season with a 14-12-2 record.” via CCX Media.

“In a battle of two of the top boys hockey teams in Section 6AA, Wayzata and Benilde-St. Margaret’s skated to a 2-2 overtime tie at the Plymouth Ice Center on Thursday. The Red Knights got on the board late in the first period from a Johnny Raymound goal, then followed that up with another goal early in the second period from Keegan Davis. The Trojans answered on a powerplay late in the second when Kruz Sauer found McCoy Kurtz to pull within one goal. Wayzata pulled their goalie with under a minute to play in the third and Holton Davison found the back of the net on a wrister to tie the game up. Both teams had opportunities in overtime, but neither could score and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.” via CCX Media.

“The Wayzata boys hockey team dropped a game against a Section 6AA foe on the road at Rogers, falling to the Royals, 3-1. Neither team scored in the first period and the game remained tied at zero at the nine minute mark into the second. Then the Royals scored two goals in the span of nineteen second. First a one-timer from Cole Bumgarner, followed by a goal from the blue line from Jayden Kurtz. The Trojans answered with a goal from Jake Nawrocki at the end of the second period, but Rogers scored the only goal in the third coming from Colton Schantzen. Wayzata is now 2-3 on the season and Rogers improves to 3-3.” via CCX Media.

It’s the third year in a row that the Trojans have come up one game short of a trip to the Class AA state tournament, losing to Edina in all three section finals. Edina then scored three unanswered goals in the third; two from Mason West and one from Freddie Schneider to earn the 4-1 win. Wayzata finishes its season with a 16-9-3 record. The Hornets have had the Trojans’ number the past two seasons, knocking Wayzata out of the postseason one game short of the state tournament. This year, the Trojans played the Hornets twice in the regular season, beating Edina 4-3 in overtime at home and tying on the road 4-4. Wayzata comes into the final with a 16-8-3 record and defeated Hopkins and Benilde-St. Margaret’s in the 6AA quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. In a high-stakes showdown at the Plymouth Ice Center, the Wayzata Trojans secured a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory against the Edina Hornets in the first of their two regular-season matchups on January 15, 2025. The win improved Wayzata’s record to 10-5-2, while Edina slipped to 11-5-0.

The Trojans struck first with a power-play goal from Colin Bierman at 4:36 in the first period, assisted by Finn De St. Hubert and George Ericson. Despite a quiet opening frame for Edina, the Hornets roared back in the second period. Mason West led the charge with two goals, including one assisted by Caleb Pittsley, who also added a power-play goal to give Edina a 3-2 advantage.

Wayzata refused to back down, as McCoy Kurtz netted his second goal of the game late in the second period, leveling the score at 3-3. Kurtz was a standout for the Trojans, scoring twice with critical setups by teammates Bierman and De St. Hubert.

After a scoreless third period, the game headed to overtime. Wayzata’s Christopher Pyle played the hero, burying the game-winning goal at 6:30 into the extra session with assists from Carson Clark and Eli Molde.

The game was a battle of goaltenders, with Wayzata’s Ryan Pellinger delivering an impressive performance, stopping 32 of 35 shots for a .914 save percentage. Edina’s Ryan Keeley faced 23 shots, saving 19 for a .826 save percentage.

Special teams also played a key role, with both teams converting one power-play opportunity each. Wayzata’s disciplined play in the clutch moments of overtime sealed the victory and set the stage for an exciting rematch later in the season.

The Trojans will look to build on this momentum as they continue their push in the competitive Minnesota high school hockey season. They play at East Grand Forks Friday at 6:30.
