The Wayzata boys hockey team lost top top-ranked Minnetonka 4-2 Thursday as the teams split their regular season series. Brittan Alstead scored on a rebound to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead in the first period but the Skippers scored the first three goals of the second period to take the lead for good. Luke Miller netted Wayzata’s second goal of the night on the powerplay, but Minnetonka scored on the next shift for the final goal of the night. John Stout scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Skippers who improved to 18-2-0 on the season. The Trojans, now winless in their past five games, dropped to 13-5-2.

Maple Grove boys’ hockey team skated past top-ranked Wayzata to win a 4-3 thriller in the third round of the Premiere Holiday Classic in the Grove tournament at Maple Grove Community Center. Maple Grove scored a pair of goals in the latter part of the second period to break a scoreless tie and take a 2-0 lead into the third period. The final period was a wild one.
Wayzata scored twice in 25 seconds midway through the period to tie the game 2-2. Just over a minute later, Maple Grove’s Blake Steenerson tallied twice in 16 seconds to restore a two-goal advantage for the Crimson at 4-2. Brooks Gengler scored with 3:24 to play to pull the Trojans within 4-3 but they couldn’t get the equalizer and Maple Grove held on for the win.
Maple Grove won all three of its games at the Classic in the Grove event to improve to 9-2-0 this season. Wayzata is now 8-1-1.

The Wayzata boys hockey team beat ninth-ranked Hill-Murray 2-1 in overtime Thursday to stay unbeaten. Rhys Wallin scored the game-winner on a pass from Jacob Kvasnicka in the overtime period. That’s after the Pioneers’ Brady Ingebritson had scored in the final minute of regulation to tie the game. Second-ranked Wayzata is now 4-0-0 this season. From CCX Media.

“The Wayzata boys’ hockey team skated to its first Turkey Trot tournament championship since 2015 Saturday, beating Maple Grove 5-1. The four-team tournament, which also included Edina and Moorhead is sponsored by CCX Media and hosted by Wayzata. Jibber Kuhl and Jake Mattson each scored two goals in the title game and three in the tourney to lead the Trojans. Goalie Will Ingemann saved 47 shots in the tournament and posted a .940 save percentage. Lucas Busch scored the lone Maple Grove goal in the title game. Wayzata had defeated Moorhead 3-2 in the semifinals Friday while Maple Grove blanked Edina 2-0 in its semifinal game. Wayzata plays at Duluth East in its next game on Saturday. That includes a part-time position for Zamboni driver. “I think just like every business, they’re looking for part-time help,” said Erik Halverson, Plymouth Ice Center manager. “You don’t have to be a hockey fan to do this. You just have to enjoy driving a big piece of equipment.”

“The coaches, players and parents of Wayzata Youth Hockey Association and the Wayzata Bantam AA hockey team extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the family of the Eastview player who passed away late yesterday during a game against Wayzata. Our Association community is heartbroken and devastated but this pales in comparison to the loss we know the family, coaches and players of Eastview must be feeling. We extend our prayers to the family and ask that whole Minnesota hockey community remember and celebrate this young man’s life.”
