The other groups includes the Deephaven Historical Society, Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Historical Society, Minnetonka Historical Society, The Museum of Lake Minnetonka, and Westonka Historical Society.
These organizations are conducting a viability study of a possible consolidation and/or strategic alliance.
“Members and key volunteers of all the historical organizations had concerns about the sustainability and efficacy of our mission-supporting activities such as programs, archives, publications, etc.,” said Wayzata Historical Society President Aaron Person.
The Wayzata Historical Society says that the six organizations have collaborated in the past and share similar missions, members, funders, volunteers and audiences.
“We’ve collaborated successfully on three projects in recent years — the book Images of America: Lake Minnetonka, a Lake Minnetonka History Tour, and cross-promotion of programs and events via newsletter insert,” said Person.
The study was made in part through a $52,000 grant funded by money from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
“We are hiring a consultant to make sure that everyone’s voice is heard and that the outcome has only positive benefits for each group and/or Lake Minnetonka history as a whole,” said Person.
The project begins this summer and is expected to be completed by next summer.
The Wayzata Historical Society was founded in 1982.
For many years the Wayzata Historical Society was based entirely within the Wayzata Depot.
In the mid-2000s, the Society’s archives were moved from the basement of the Depot to the new Wayzata Library on Rice Street.

Designed in 1916 by prominent architect Harry Wild Jones (Butler Building, Lakewood Chapel) for Wayzata Community Church, this is the oldest church building in Wayzata, and is the recipient of the Wayzata Heritage Preservation Board’s 2016 Centennial Building Award.
This building replaced Wayzata Community Church’s second building, also designed by Jones, which had burned in February of 1916 and was almost identical in design. The building has housed the Wayzata Community Church (1916-1949), Wayzata Free Church (1952-1965) and UUCM (1965-present). UUCM is preparing to break ground this year for a new church home in the Holdridge area of Wayzata, and this historic building will be offered for sale this spring.
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Minnetonka (UUCM) was founded in 1960 and has been served by The Rev. Kent Hemmen Saleska since 2007. UUCM’s mission is to inspire, educate and serve as a welcoming congregation on a quest for meaning and purpose to create a community of conscience in our neighborhood and the world.

Wayzata used to have fireworks in the sky on the Fourth of July. Now there are pancakes in the air on the Fourth. This is an entertaining mixture of happenings. Guests are asked to “catch them if you can” as the vendor flips pancakes! The highlight for the past two years remains the appearance of authentically dressed Revolutionary soldiers (and others in period dress) who; tell tales of the period, march in drill fashion to the beat of a revolutionary drum and fire their black powder muskets over the lake. The name of the reenactor group is the 7th Pennsylvania Regiment. Last year’s turnout of 600 guests was a huge event, it doubled the previous year. The “Flying Pancake Breakfast” is at the Wayzata Depot from 8 a.m. to noon. Gather up your family and friends and come to this event. Veterans are served breakfast without charge.
The Wayzata Historical Society supports this event as an example of patriotism in action! The Society helps fund the Revolutionary actors who present the history of our nation’s independence in a very real way. This 3rd annual salute to our Nation’s Independence is sponsored by the Lake Minnetonka Children of the American Revolution. C.A.R. is a small group of local youth who have no fundraising arm to support this event and depend entirely on contributions. They are a tax exempt 501(c)3 organization and encourage business and individual donors to help ensure that this community event may continue. To assist with the funding of this event, contact Adrienne Morrison at 763-473-7600.
The story behind the Children of the American Revolution The C.A.R. is the oldest Patriotic Youth organization in the country. It was organized in 1895 and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The Lake Minnetonka CAR is the only active C.A.R. Society in Minnesota. The organization’s goal is to train good citizens, develop leaders, promote love of the United States and its heritage among young people. Students from Orono, Blake, Breck, Providence Academy and Wayzata schools man two projects. The July 4th event is their largest project by far, but they also install 15 flags at Heritage Park on the five patriotic holidays which coincide with the days that the city of Wayzata installs theirs. This ceremony is complete with flag awareness, ritual of significance and is inclusive of other youth groups and guests. The idea of featuring “Flying Pancakes” in the July 4th event originated with Orono Senior, Elle Gueringer.
