Wayzata City Council To Review Section Foreman House Preservation Site Designation Request

At Tuesday’s city council meeting, the council will review a preservation site designation request for the Wayzata’s Section Foreman House.

On Monday, Dec. 16, the Wayzata Planning Commission reviewed a request from the Heritage Preservation Board to designate the Section Foreman House as a Heritage Preservation Site.

The commissioners unanimously approved a motion to direct staff to prepare a draft Planning Commission report and recommendation for approval that the Section Foreman House be designated as a Historic Preservation Site to be reviewed and adopted at the next Planning Commission meeting.

According to city code, the designation requires a public hearing with the Planning Commission and approval by City Council.

The Section Foreman House was built in 1902 to support the section foremen and their families.

The section foreman was in charge of a section gang tasked with making sure the railroad tracks were in good repair.

The Wayzata Section Foreman House is believed to be the only section house in Minnesota still standing at its original location.

The Section Foreman House is located along the railroad tracks on Lake Minnetonka just east of where the Great Northern Depot stands. The depot was built in 1906.

With a Heritage Preservation Site designation in place, a site alteration permit will be need to be approved by the City Council.

The main reason for the site alteration permit is to ensure that no changes will be made that will impair the historical integrity of the structure. The process allows for more public input and transparency around proposed changes to historic house.

Wayzata Church to Celebrate Historic Building’s Centennial

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Minnetonka (UUCM) will host a centennial celebration of their historic church building with a special worship service and open house on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at 605 Rice Street, Wayzata, Minnesota. The public is invited to the celebratory service at 10:30 am, which will be led by UUCM minister Reverend Kent Hemmen Saleska.

The service will honor the building’s 100 years as a home to three congregations, all still active in Wayzata. The Community Open House will be held from 1:004:00 pm and will feature tours, information and displays about the historic building, highlighting its dramatic interior and commemorative stained glass windows. Refreshments will also be served.

The open house is cosponsored by UUCM, the Wayzata Historical Society and the Wayzata Heritage Preservation Board. These events are free and open to the public. Designed in 1916 by prominent architect Harry Wild Jones (Butler Building, Lakewood Chapel) for Wayzata Community Church, this is the oldest church building in Wayzata, and is the recipient of the Wayzata Heritage Preservation Board’s 2016 Centennial Building Award.

This building replaced Wayzata Community Church’s second building, also designed by Jones, which had burned in February of 1916 and was almost identical in design. The building has housed the Wayzata Community Church (1916-1949), Wayzata Free Church (1952-1965) and UUCM (1965-present). UUCM is preparing to break ground this year for a new church home in the Holdridge area of Wayzata, and this historic building will be offered for sale this spring.

Trappers Cabin History Event

The Heritage Preservation Board is holding a history/storytelling event on Saturday, September 20, 2014. Attendees will hear the history of Bushaway Road and other historic buildings, homes and neighborhoods throughout Wayzata. The event begins promptly at 11:00 am.

Wayzata Post Office off the Market, for the time being

“The word from the U.S. Postal Service is that the sale of the Wayzata Post Office building is off the market, at least for the time being! Thank you to all who took the time to sign the petition to “Save Our Post Office” and send letters and cards to our legislators in Washington. The 1200 signatures from Wayzata residents were forwarded to our legislators, asset managers and officers of the Postal Service as concrete evidence that the people in Wayzata care very deeply about their historic post office.”
