By Matt Thomas, Wayzata.com Sports ReporterAfter winning its quarterfinal match at the Class AA state tournament, the Wayzata boys’ tennis team lost twice on Wednesday to finish in fourth place.
The Trojans fell 6-1 to Rochester Mayo in a semifinal match as Max Reisman was the lone Trojans player to win his match at No. 2 singles. Reisman defeated Krishna Vege 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6). The Trojans lost in straight sets in the six other matches.
In the third place match, the Trojans wound up on the short side of a 5-2 score to Mounds View. Scott Vezzosi won his match at No. 4 singles handily 6-0, 6-1. The number three doubles tandem of Michael Ries and Jason Lee also won their match in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Individual play begins today at the Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota. Wayzata senior Ty Simcoe and junior Gary Notkin will open play in the doubles tournament at 10 a.m. against the Blaine duo of Ryan Holmgren and David Leafblad.

By Matt Thomas, Wayzata.com Sports ReporterThe Wayzata boy’s tennis team moved into Wednesday’s semifinals at the Class AA state tennis tournament with a 7-0 victory over Duluth East on Tuesday.
The Trojans’ four singles players swept through their matches without losing a set. Gary Notkin won his No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-3. Max Reisman won at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0. Duncan Sallstrom cruised through his match at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-0. Scott Vezzosi rounded out the dominance in the singles matches at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-3 victory.
The doubles matches were more competitive as Duluth East actually took two sets from the Trojans. Wayzata’s Ryan Weber and Ty Simcoe pulled out a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles. Diuliano Kornberg and Deepak Janardan rallied for a 0-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. Michael Ries and Jason Lee won in straight sets at No. 3 doubles 7-5, 6-1.
The Trojans will play two matches on Wednesday to finish out the team tournament. The Trojans are slated to face Rochester Mayo at 10 a.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota in one semifinal. Perennial powers Edina and Mounds View will meet in the other semifinal.
The third place match is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, while the championship match will take place at 4 p.m.

Wayzata High School tennis players Michael Ries and Jason Lee were featured in the Star Tribune for being prime examples of in-season improvement under tennis coach Jeff Prondzinski.According to the article, Prondzinski said this is the most in-season progress any team of his has made in his 15 years of coaching.
The article also features high school sophomore Sarah Urke, a synchronized swimmer who left the high school team to pursue an opportunity with the U.S. Junior National Team. The high school team competed without Urke last week at the state meet at the University of Minnesota.

By Matt Thomas, Wayzata.com Sports ReporterThe Wayzata boy’s tennis team will make a return trip to the state tournament this spring after defeating Mankato West and Minnetonka on Tuesday morning in section 2AA play at Gustavus Adolphus College.
The Trojans had no trouble disposing of Mankato West by a score of 7-0, but had to scratch out a close 4-3 victory over Minnetonka to earn its way into the state tournament.
The state tournament will be held June 2 and 3 at the Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
This week, members of the team will look to qualify individually for the state tournament in the individual portion of the section tournament. Those matches will be played on Friday, May 22, and Tuesday, May 26.

By Matt Thomas, Wayzata.com Sports ReporterThe Wayzata boys tennis team advanced to the semifinals in section 2AA on Thursday afternoon with a 6-1 victory over Chaska.
The semifinals and finals will be played on Tuesday, May 19, at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn.
The Trojans will face Mankato West in one semifinal at 9 a.m. Minnetonka and Hutchinson will play in the second semifinal. The semifinal winners will meet in the championship match at 11 a.m.
The Trojans are looking to return to the state tournament after they won the consolation championship at last year’s tournament.
