“The Hopkins boys basketball team held off a second-half charge from Wayzata to earn a last-second win over the Trojans, 77-76. The Royals got up by as many as 15 points in the second half, but led by Christian Wiggins’ 33 points Wayzata came all the way back and cut the lead to one. Wyatt McBeth couldn’t get his shot off with 5.8 seconds left and the Royals held on for the win. Hopkins was led by Anthony Smith III, who poured in 23 points while Jayden Moore added 17. Then after the game, emotions were running high, with words exchanged between the coaching staffs.” via CCX Media.

In a battle between two highly-ranked Class 4A teams, the Eden Prairie Eagles emerged victorious over the Wayzata Trojans, securing an 81-73 win at Eden Prairie High School on Tuesday, January 14. The victory solidified Eden Prairie’s position as the No. 1 team in Minnesota Basketball News’ rankings, while Wayzata remains at No. 7.
The game was a closely contested affair, with Eden Prairie holding a narrow 35-32 lead at halftime. The Eagles extended their advantage in the second half, outscoring Wayzata 46-41 to claim the win.
Key Performances
For Eden Prairie (13-2-0), Tori Schlagel delivered a dominant performance, scoring 29 points while hitting all eight of her free throws. Cam Dennin contributed 15 points, including three three-pointers, while Ziwilani Simbeye added 14 points and eight rebounds. Vanessa Jordan filled the stat sheet with 10 points and six assists.
Wayzata (10-4-0) was led by Sophie Hawkinson, who poured in 26 points, including three shots from beyond the arc and a strong 7-of-9 performance at the free-throw line. Annika Kieser added 16 points, and Katie Kelzenberg chipped in 13 points, going a perfect 3-for-3 from the line.
Game Breakdown
Eden Prairie’s shooting efficiency was a key factor, as the Eagles shot an impressive 58.7% from the field and 90% from the free-throw line. They also controlled the boards with 19 rebounds and distributed the ball effectively, tallying 14 assists.
The Trojans showed resilience, keeping pace with the Eagles through solid contributions across their lineup. Despite their efforts, Wayzata’s 27 made field goals and 11 successful free throws were not enough to overcome Eden Prairie’s offensive firepower.
Looking Ahead
Eden Prairie’s victory reinforces their status as a top contender in Class 4A as they continue their impressive season. Wayzata will look to regroup and build on their strong start to the campaign as they prepare for upcoming conference matchups including at Edina on Friday night at 7pm.

The Wayzata Trojans are gearing up for another exciting week of athletic competition, with plenty of action both at home and on the road. Here’s a closer look at what’s ahead, along with updates on some key teams.
Boys Basketball: Searching for a Spark
The Trojans’ boys basketball team (1-2) is looking to bounce back after a tough start to the season. Last year they finished 2nd in the state tournament with marquee player Jackson McAndrew who has since graduated and is playing at Creighton.
Last Saturday, Wayzata fell just short in a 68-71 battle with #1-ranked AAA Totino-Grace, a game that went down to the wire. This followed a heartbreaking overtime loss to Orono earlier in the week.
Tonight, Wayzata travels to Maple Grove for a critical matchup against the Crimson, aiming to build momentum. Junior standout Isaac Olmstead has been a force on the court, averaging 21.7 points per game, with senior Nolan Anderson close behind at 21.
Girls Basketball: Off to a Dominant Start
On the other side of the court, the girls basketball team has hit the ground running with a 3-1 start to the season. The Trojans are coming off a commanding 102-31 win over Park Center, with five players scoring in double digits. Sophomore Sophie Hawkinson led the way with 22 points, followed by Annika Kieser (13), Katie Kelzenberg (12), Allie Berns (12), and Marin Day (10).
The team faces another test tonight as they welcome Chaska to Wayzata High School. With their high-powered offense clicking, the Trojans will look to continue their strong play.
Boys Hockey: Strong Start to the Season
The boys hockey team is skating strong with a 4-1-1 record to open their season. Most recently, the Trojans fought to a 1-1 tie against White Bear Lake in a tightly contested matchup. Senior Eli Molde and junior George Ericson are leading the charge offensively, with eight points each on the season.
Tonight, the Trojans head to Eden Prairie Community Center to take on a tough Eagles squad. Expect a hard-fought battle as Wayzata aims to add another win to their solid start.
Girls Hockey: Battling Through the Early Schedule
The girls hockey team is sitting at 4-4 after a mixed start to the season. Noelle Noble and Julia Ostapeic have been bright spots offensively, leading the team with 8 and 6 points, respectively.
The Trojans will look to move above .500 tonight as they hit the road to face Buffalo at Buffalo High School. With the season still young, the team has plenty of time to hit their stride.
Other Highlights This Week
- Adapted Hockey: The Trojans will host Anoka-Hennepin at Wayzata High School on Monday.
- Nordic Skiing: Boys and girls teams will compete in skate races at Hyland Park Reserve on Wednesday.
