IOCP Sleep Out 2008: Kick off celebrates "The Community That Can"

The 13th annual IOCP Sleep Out Kick Off Celebration was held Saturday night, November 15th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Klapprich Park. The goal this year is for $2 million to help raise funds to address the emergency housing needs and pursue affordable housing developments in the local community.

KARE 11 Anchor Mike Pomeranz was the master of ceremonies, with notable appearances by Corey Koskie, Bob Fisher, LaDonna Hoy, Peter Larson, Mayor Andrew Humphrey, Sonny Clark and Dave Dudinsky.

Koskie told his story about his brain injury and not being able to work, and how that relates to those in need of IOCP’s assistance. Fisher touted the Stars in Cars program in which he and Koskie plan to sleep in their cars next Saturday night to raise funds.

LaDonna Hoy addressed the dire need to raise funds for those in our community, and 14 year old Peter Larson talked about his plans to raise $71,000 during his sleep-out efforts. Mayor Humphrey declared it “Sleep Out Day” in the City of Wayzata, and Sonny Clark and Dave Dundinsky received awards of appreciation for their service to IOCP through the City of Wayzata.

Funds raised as of Sunday were at $300,000 according to the sign in front of Anchor Bank keeping the tally.

From the Wayzata Bay Window, Winter 2008 Edition.

6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Novomber 15 At Klapprich Park. Join IOCP to kick off The Sleep Out 2008 Campaign. The need has never been greater. IOCP is relying on the generosity, heart, and will of this community to meet its $2 million goal. Kare 11 Anchor Mike Pomeranz will emcee the event that includes free food, music, and speakers, including Bob Fisher, affordable housing advocate, and LaDonna Hoy, executive director of IOCP. During the Sleep Out, people gather pledges and sleep out in a tent at IOCP or host sleep outs at their churches, schools, businesses, homes and in their neighborhoods.

The campaign, runs Nov. 15-Dec. 23 to create greater awareness around the
issue of affordable housing and to ensure that IOCP can respond to the increased demand for some form of housing assistance in our community.

IOCP & CommonBond Communities seek to develop affordable housing with Bay Center funds

IOCP and CommonBond Communities went before the Wayzata Planning Commission last week seeking to take steps to provide more affordable housing in the City of Wayzata. Thier proposed location for said housing is at the corners of Central and Elm, just north of the Anchor Bank Building in downtown Wayzata. According to an article in the Lakeshore Weekly News, the Wayzata City Council has signed off on some type of affordable housing outside of the Bay Center, in that the value of the land underneath the Bay Center did not allow for affordable housing to be created within that project.

As a result, Presbyterian Homes agreed to help fund a new affordable housing project through IOCP, who will receive $200,000 in funds for the said project. IOCP will also be contributing $200,000 of it’s own money, as well as receiving $121,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds from the City and Hennepin County. All told the project, called Wayzata Gateway, is expected to cost $5.4 million.

While watching the Planning Commission meeting from last week, this issue made the commissioners wring their hands, because of the proximity to single family homes, the already 50% multi-family ratio in the City, and other issues.

Local residents surrounding the area are resisting the development. www.FriendsofBenton.com creator Todd Buchanon, a resident on Benton Avenue located right behind the proposed development, voiced some of his neighborhoods concerns, “Our community [Wayzata, MN] is 51.7% multi-family homes, and the Met Council wants more multi-family in Wayzata. The Met Council seems to have no specific data as to how they arrived at a formula for the need for more multi-family in Wayzata. The city of Wayzata has stated in the Comprehensive Plan that one of the prime long term goals was to preserve single family homes.”

31 Year Wayzata Resident Greg Rye Honored with Fred Moritz Award

The Sun Sailor has a great article about Greg Rye winning the the Fred Moritz Award which is administrated from Jim Ramstad’s office. During the ceremony, Ramstad identified Greg’s community service as a major factor in the selection. Greg is a Wayzata School Board Member, and has served on the City Council, Planning Commission, and IOCP.
