Sunsets restaurant held its 15th annual Ice Out Party Tuesday night to celebrate the melting of Lake Minnetonka and the arrival of Spring. With live music and many party-goers providing entertainment and a parrot-shaped martini luge carved out of ice featuring Kilo Kai rum, attendees were able to usher in the changing of the seasons in style. On an evening that threatened April showers, more than 100 party goers took part in Sunsets’ pirate-themed gala. Prizes were given away throughout the night to the group, including a $400 grand prize from Minnetonka Travel.
“We’re celebrating the opening of Lake Minnetonka — celebrating that the ice is off the lake, and we’re celebrating after a long winter,” Sunsets Manager Ryan Stattman said. Stattman, who has been an employee at Sunsets for the past seven years, said it has been a tradition for as long as he can remember. “This is at least the 15th (Ice Out Party), but Sunsets has been open for 20 years, so it could be that old.”
The Grand Prize package was awarded to Kelli Quist, who was one of 41 people able to predict when the last chunk of ice would vanish from Lake Minnetonka. From the 41 applicants eligible to win the prize, Quist was chosen after her name was picked from a hat.
“It’s karma — I provide a (prize) and my name gets pulled,” Quist joked. A massage therapist by trade, Quist provided a free massage as a door prize for the random drawings.

We have a winner in the Wayzata.com and Minnesota’s Lake Minnetonka Ice Out Contest as well, recipient of a 50.00 gift certificate from Sunsets in Wayzata. Two people guessed the same day, but one guessed the time closest. We’ll announce the winner shortly.
Dan Gustafson of Wayzata.com shows you the open water in front of the Wayzata Depot and docks on Wayzata Bay. Won’t be long before the water is completely open.
It was cool but clear yesterday as many fisherman took up residence on the Wayzata Docks trying to catch some fish. Check out how far the ice is receding on Wayzata Bay, and then note how Gray’s Bay is almost completely clear. It’s almost time to declare Lake Minnetonka Ice Out!
The Admiral over at Minnesota’s Lake Minnetonka posted some nice things to remember as the ice out inches closer. Additionally, here is some footage from Wayzata Bay I shot last night as the sun was setting. While the ice is inching away from the shoreline, it has got a long way to go.
The next couple of days should put a real dent in the ice that is on Wayzata Bay. Gray’s Bay is starting to get quite of bit of water around the edges as you drive over the Gray’s Bay Bridge. The bridge under Libb’s Lake has been liquid for weeks, and the Wayzata Boat Works docks never really do freeze. Most of the ice has a real grey tone to it, and in speaking Greg, the guy who rents me my boat slip, the ice actually gets very porous, fills with water, and then sinks. We will keep you posted as to the status of the ice and let you know as soon as it goes out. Stay tuned to Wayzata.com.
