Wayzata Football moves to 1-0 on the season, will face Tonka next week

After a one hour rain delay, your Wayzata Trojans opened the scoring in a highly anticipated matchup against the #4 ranked Lakeville South Cougars on a Friday night showdown.

On the opening drive and with 8:52 remaining in the first quarter, Wayzata senior quarterback Oscar Shoap connected with junior wide receiver Sam Booh on a perfectly executed pitch and catch.

The 7-yard touchdown pass, followed by a successful extra point, gave the Trojans an early 7-0 lead.

Lakeville South responded with a methodical 13-play, 73-yard drive, showcasing their power running game.

Junior running back Max Zagorski capped the drive with an 8-yard touchdown rush, tying the game at 7-7.

In the second quarter, Wayzata’s offense regained momentum, marching down the field to set up a field goal under the guidance of Junior QB Matthew Berkland.

A successful field goal kick by senior Nate Negash gave the Trojans a 10-7 lead with 8:53 remaining in the half.

The Trojans’ defense then made a crucial stop in the red zone, halting the Cougars’ progress on a 4th-and-3 play as senior cornerback Bennet Brown tackled the ball carrier with under a minute left before halftime.

The teams headed to the locker rooms with Wayzata holding a slim 10-7 advantage.

In the third quarter, senior outside linebacker Evan McCarty recovered a fumble, giving the Trojans possession and setting up a key scoring drive.

Early in the fourth quarter, Kyle Boutwell broke two tackles on a 28-yard touchdown scamper to the right, extending Wayzata’s lead to 17-7.

Lakeville South kept the game close with a quick 5-play, 62-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Gaven Dean, cutting the deficit to 17-14 with 3:15 remaining.

However, Wayzata’s defense held strong in the final minutes to secure the win.

The Trojans will travel to Minnetonka next Friday, Sept. 6, 2024, to face the Skippers in the Battle of the Bay Bell at Einer Anderson Stadium.
