
In a significant achievement, Stella Swenson, a student-athlete from Wayzata High School, has been named the Gatorade Minnesota Volleyball Player of the Year for the 2023-24 season, Gatorade announced on January 8, 2024.
This marks the 39th year of Gatorade recognizing the nation’s most exceptional high school athletes.
Swenson, a three-time Gatorade Player of the Year, is set to continue her volleyball journey at the University of Minnesota.
The award, which highlights excellence on the court, in the classroom, and in the community, distinguishes Swenson as the best high school volleyball player in Minnesota.
Notable Gatorade Player of the Year alumni include Harper Murray, Kerri Walsh Jennings, and April Ross.
As a 6-foot-2 setter, Swenson played a pivotal role in leading the Wayzata Trojans to a perfect 34-0 record and securing the Class AAAA state title in the previous season.
Her outstanding performance earned her the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association Ms. Baden Award as the state’s best player.
Swenson, known for her remarkable setting skills, averaged 9.9 assists per set, with a .399 hitting percentage, and compiled 215 digs, 140 kills, 63 service aces, and 53 blocks.
She is ranked as the nation’s No. 8 recruit in her class by PrepDig.
Beyond the volleyball court, Swenson has dedicated her time to volunteering at local assisted living facilities, fostering active friendships with residents.
Eagan High School head coach Kathy Gillen commended Swenson’s exceptional skills, describing her as one of the best setters she has seen.
Maintaining a 3.46 weighted GPA in the classroom, Swenson has signed a national letter of intent to play volleyball on scholarship at the University of Minnesota starting this fall.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes outstanding high school athletes across various sports in all 50 states.
Swenson joins the ranks of past Gatorade Minnesota Volleyball Players of the Year, including Erin Lamb and Kennedi Orr.
As part of Gatorade’s commitment to breaking down barriers in sport, every Player of the Year receives a grant to donate to a social impact partner.
Gatorade Player of the Year winners’ grants have collectively surpassed $4.9 million across more than 1,600 organizations.
