Stella Swenson is a three-time Gatorade Minnesota Volleyball Player of the Year

In a significant achievement, Stella Swenson, a student-athlete from Wayzata High School, has been named the Gatorade Minnesota Volleyball Player of the Year for the 2023-24 season, Gatorade announced on January 8, 2024.

This marks the 39th year of Gatorade recognizing the nation’s most exceptional high school athletes.

Swenson, a three-time Gatorade Player of the Year, is set to continue her volleyball journey at the University of Minnesota.

The award, which highlights excellence on the court, in the classroom, and in the community, distinguishes Swenson as the best high school volleyball player in Minnesota.

Notable Gatorade Player of the Year alumni include Harper Murray, Kerri Walsh Jennings, and April Ross.

As a 6-foot-2 setter, Swenson played a pivotal role in leading the Wayzata Trojans to a perfect 34-0 record and securing the Class AAAA state title in the previous season.

Her outstanding performance earned her the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association Ms. Baden Award as the state’s best player.

Swenson, known for her remarkable setting skills, averaged 9.9 assists per set, with a .399 hitting percentage, and compiled 215 digs, 140 kills, 63 service aces, and 53 blocks.

She is ranked as the nation’s No. 8 recruit in her class by PrepDig.

Beyond the volleyball court, Swenson has dedicated her time to volunteering at local assisted living facilities, fostering active friendships with residents.

Eagan High School head coach Kathy Gillen commended Swenson’s exceptional skills, describing her as one of the best setters she has seen.

Maintaining a 3.46 weighted GPA in the classroom, Swenson has signed a national letter of intent to play volleyball on scholarship at the University of Minnesota starting this fall.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes outstanding high school athletes across various sports in all 50 states.

Swenson joins the ranks of past Gatorade Minnesota Volleyball Players of the Year, including Erin Lamb and Kennedi Orr.

As part of Gatorade’s commitment to breaking down barriers in sport, every Player of the Year receives a grant to donate to a social impact partner.

Gatorade Player of the Year winners’ grants have collectively surpassed $4.9 million across more than 1,600 organizations.

Wayzata Boys Basketball defeats Buffalo Bison 83-54, now 12-0

#1 ranked Wayzata Boys Basketball (12-0) beat a resilient Buffalo Bison (8-3) team in an exciting Lake Conference match-up hosted at the Wayzata High School on Friday night, highlighted as youth night.

In front of a packed house, Wayzata got out to relatively quick lead while demonstrating a well-rounded offensive strategy.

In the first half alone Christian Wiggins and Wyatt McBeth each had 8 points, while Jackson McAndrew notched 7.

One standout moment during that first half was by Isaac Olmstead, who made his defender fall down while driving to the top of the key, stopping, and draining a three pointer to make it 21-7 in favor of Wayzata.

Head Coach Bryan Schnettler talked about his shifty guard after the game, “Isaac has a special ability to score the ball and make his teammates better. He is one of the best passers I have ever coached and when you combine that with his ability to shoot you get someone who is very hard to guard.”

The Trojans took a strong lead at halftime, with a score of 41-26.

Despite Wayzata’s initial dominance, the Bison showcased their determination, employing long-range shooting to net 10 three-pointers throughout the game.

Near the midway point of the second half, Jackson McAndrew decided to take over, making a number of strategic plays and moves to widen the gap in favor of the Trojans.

McAndrew’s versatile performance included three-point shooting, post-up plays, dunks, and successful free throws.

To illustrate the difference, McAndrew had 5 points in the first half and 18 points in the second half.

His outstanding efforts led Wayzata to a commanding victory, even as the Bison continued to somewhat hang around with three-pointers in the second half; until a full court press late in the game finalized the Bison loss.

Coach Schnettler was very pleased with the defensive effort after the game, “Our guys played very hard tonight. We took 2 charges and forced 4 shot clock violations. It was fun to watch our guys compete.”

The game, held on youth night, provided fans with an entertaining display of skill and determination from both teams as well as a three-point shooting contest at half time and an opportunity to get autographs from the team after the game.

Wayzata’s balanced attack, strong defense, and McAndrew’s standout second half performance ultimately secured their 12th consecutive win of the season.

McAndrew led all scorers with 23 points, including 5 three-pointers.

Wyatt McBeth scored 10 points, Michael Saphir had 9, Evan Johnson and Drew Nepstad had 4 points each, Nicklaus Hein had 3, Brayden Sandmann had 2 points, as did Daniel Grubesic.

Isaac Olmstead had 13 points including 3 three-pointers, Christian Wiggins also had 13 points including 2 three-pointers.

Announced attendance was 13,871.

Wayzata’s next game is Tuesday, January 16th at Eden Prairie (6-8).

Petition, feedback derail block schedule changes at Wayzata High School as District explores budget cuts

Larger class sizes contemplated as one potential solution

Wayzata Public Schools are confronting financial challenges and contemplating cost-cutting measures, including potential increases in class sizes, following a declined proposal to alter a longstanding block schedule at Wayzata High School.

The initial plan, intended to save $1.2 million through staff cuts, faced opposition from the community in the form of a petition bearing over 2,600 signatur es as well as feedback from stakeholders delivered directly to board members through emails, phone calls, and text messages.

Experiencing financial strain due to enrollment fluctuations and COVID-related expenses, the district is aiming to rebuild reserves to 7% of operating expenses, currently hovering at 6.8%. In pursuit of $1.5 million in cuts, district leaders initially considered modifying or eliminating the block schedule.

Superintendent Chace Anderson acknowledges the delicate balance between financial stability and preserving the high school schedule, proposing increased class sizes as an alternative, albeit with a cautionary note that schedule changes may still be inevitable.

Despite the financial pressures, the school board unanimously rejected altering the block schedule, highlighting its crucial role in enabling students to take 16 courses annually. The potential alterations seemed to pose a threat to the district’s reputation for academic excellence and its unique offerings, such as increased elective choices and advanced math classes.

Petition organizer Luyao Yang indicated there would be potential negative impacts on students as 2,600+ people added their signatures to the petition on Change.org opposing the proposed changes to the block schedule. Luyao’s stated concerns focus on the reduction of classes, increased workload, and potential for diminished education quality, especially in subjects like math and AP Calculus, with implications for college preparedness.

Plymouth City Council Rejects ‘Megachurch’ Proposal

A “megachurch” is facing the need to explore alternative locations as the Plymouth City Council has turned down its plan to build on undeveloped farmland. Eagle Brook Church had proposed the construction o a 64,000 square-foot church at the intersection of Maple Grove Parkway and Chankahda Trail, located just across the street and to the north of Meadow Ridge Elementary School.

The proposed site is also about two miles north of the Wayzata High School, which is where Eagle Brook Church services have been held for over five years.

The council ultimately voted 6-1 to reject the project, citing concerns about its compatibility and impact on the surrounding neighborhood. Maple Grove Mayor Mark Steffenson expressed reservations, emphasizing the operational challenge posed by having only one access point to the proposed facility.

Minnetonka and Corcoran were the two other communities who previously denied applications from Eagle Brook.
1939 Wayzata class ring found in Duluth, mother & son seek owner

A young boy and his mom are hoping you might be able to help them find the owner of a high school class ring that’s 84 years old, after finding the memento on the shores of a lake near Duluth, Minnesota.

The class ring is from 1939 and appears to have the initials G.R.T. engraved on the inside. It was manufactured by Josten’s.

Wayzata High School 2020 Virtual Graduation Ceremony Set For July 1

Wayzata High School will host a virtual graduation ceremony Wednesday, July 1 at 7:00 p.m.

The school district said that a follow-up email with details for accessing the virtual ceremony will be sent to all families on Monday, June 29.

Graduation Celebration and Diploma Pick-Up

On Tuesday, June 30, and Wednesday, July 1, all seniors can come to the high school campus to receive their diploma.

The Wayzata High School Stadium and field will be used to conduct a diploma distribution and celebration for each graduate.

Professional photographers from Lifetouch Studios will be present, taking pictures of students receiving their diploma and celebrating this milestone event.

Photographs will be provided digitally to families at no cost.

Guests

Graduates and their families should arrive in one car. Only members of the senior’s immediate family will be allowed inside the stadium and on the field for viewing and picture taking. The event will be streamed live via Facebook for extended family members to watch.

Attire

Students should wear their school issued cap and gown.

Wayzata student to pursue Minnesota military first

A Wayzata High School student is making history. Catherine Zorn of Plymouth is the first female from Minnesota to enlist in the United States Army infantry. Zorn, 17, comes from a military family: her grandfather, aunt and brother were also in the military.
WHS Freshman Raises Tourette’s Syndrome Awareness Through Leadership

Wayzata High School freshman Jack Shink has been named Minnesota’s 2016 Youth Ambassador for the Tourette’s Syndrome Association, an organization dedicated to making life better for all people affected by tic disorders.

Jack represents the state of Minnesota by assisting in media-related activities to spread awareness and raise funds for research and treatment. He shares his personal story, what Tourette’s has meant for him, what it means for those around him, and he challenges people to think about their definition of inclusion.

In March he attended the Tourette’s Syndrome Association’s national conference in Washington DC with 49 other state ambassadors for leadership training and to lobby with both Senator Franken and Senator Klobuchar.
